@Mytho I don't think there's much of an issue with the callbacks tbh. They've tried so many different directions with their last few albums that an album fusing those styles and including direct references to older material feels like a deserved bit of fanservice.
I feel it would be an issue if they did it a second time.

no problem, of course. It's an amazing duo of albums, highly entertaining. It just so happens that I appreciate Affinity more than the last two, because it feels like something distinct, rather than something distilled.

Vector felt very distinct imo, this less so but still two really solid albums

Messiah Complex is 5/5 material for Haken fans. The rest is fine on the first listen.

I just don't see what people see in Haken

I feel the same about The Mountain hahaha

I think Haken could benefit from having a more lower registered vocals along with Ross to compliment the heavier sections better, I'm thinking a SikTh type of deal, although Ross does a fair job as it is

Hm, can’t imagine them ever topping the Mountain, but I’m glad it is good enough to fool some ;)

Upon another listen, I'm noticing a few more weak sections than I did upon the first. Probably more around a 3.7-3.8 than a 4

Idk... I'm finding this pretty boring from the start. It's got some groovy parts, but it feels pretty lifeless as a whole...

I like the Cocroach King reprises on/around Ectobius Rex.
This is pretty good, but I still feel like these guys caught lightning in a bottle on The Mountain. I don't think they're particularly chasing the same thing three albums later (shoot, they weren't even going for the same thing on Affinity), but I also don't really see them hitting that height again.

I never liked Haken but I wish I did. Think I prefer more raw and less planned sounding prog outings. Shit is so clean I can't even get into it.

Your review sold me

I really like their drummer. Wish the drums weren't so compressed though. Mountain had amazing production
