Wait what? Sowing, you having a laugh? Trench is the only good thing about this band. Excluding this one cause I haven’t figured this one out yet.

thanks Jesper! and yeah, idk what it is but I've always enjoyed Trench more than Blurryface and I don't exactly know why (but I still love Blurryface so..)

Nah lol I legit think Blurryface is the best of their 3 recent records. I haven't listened to Vessels any time recently enough to weigh in on that one, and never heard anything prior to that. But Blurryface was sort of an introduction to the band for me, so maybe that's part of the reason why? Trench seemed so boring to me, no hooks I can recall. I do remember there being a particularly great scream on one of the first few tracks, but that's it.

Sowing, you definitely need to check out their first album, think you'd like that one for sure

I will try to for sure. It's always been on the fringe of my radar/"to listen" list.

I don't understand yall who didn't like Trench. Feels miles about everything else they've done in just about everything... production quality, songwriting maturity, cohesiveness as a project and concept, etc.

it's wild to me that people think Trenches is more mature and cohesive when it literally has a song about owning a cheetah named Jason Statham
what I love about twenty one pilots is the genre grab bag, their heart-on-sleeve sincerity, and stupid choruses that they make work by sheer earnestness. Trenches felt like the band forcing themselves into something they're not -- it just lacked that manic energy. I think Jumpsuit is one of the band's best songs, and Levitate and Neon Gravestones are very good tracks, but the rest of the album can't hold a candle to Blurryface/Vessel. And the new album feels like they've smoothed out all the dynamic peaks and valleys into a flatline.

I'm not really grasping the critiques presented in this thread
The quirkiness is scaled back (ha) but this record is still dynamic as hell

I do not hear that at all, the dynamic range is tiny compared to Trench, let alone Blurryface/Vessel

Trench is absolutely their best album, but I have to say I'm glad that they went for such a huge change in sound from Trench to this. Yeah, Scaled and Icy is worse but it was never going to be as good as Trench and it was always going to be compared to it so I think it was a good move to go for something completely different. Plus honestly after the last two years the world doesn't need another kind of grim and dark album

I didn't realize people like Trench, thought their career fell off a cliff with that one. I assume it must have actually done pretty well.

I'm biased because I've been a fan of this group for quite some time, but Trench was my favorite for a while (but then I dove into the debut more and fell in love with that one)

I need to revisit Trench, but this is the most I've enjoyed TOP in a long while.
