"Yeah I don't like Dustin's voice on these songs as much. It works great on Paper Tiger but something like All That's Left is completely neutered. The melodies just sound a little weird with a more mature, raspier voice. "

It's what you'd hear live if you saw them now, so I'm not quite sure I understand the complaint. They've said over the years of playing them this is what these songs have become. Would you say the same thing after hearing them live and playing these songs?

The complaints in general just seem bizarre to me. The original, polished version still exists. The band wanted to do this, and it was clearly a good time for them. I think it's an awesome idea to re-capture an album like this.

Comparing it to a live performance is an odd line to draw

Exactly. People need to accept artists age.

If Metallica re-recorded Ride the Lightning to reflect how the songs have evolved since the original recording, we'd need to accept it and not be critical of the changes? I don't agree with their position on this particular release, but big picture, I see how the complaints are valid.

I never liked Abolition of Man that much on the original, but it really crackles here. The guitar leads are insane all over this.

The instrumentation sounds really tight and full if not a little bit too generic like much of modern post hardcore.

The vocals are really bad though, really feels like someone's dad trying to sound hardcore.

Dustin sounds so bad on the bridge of the t/t. That is Dustin right? Lol.

Don't tell and we won't ask is probably an improvement over the original, or at least not a downgrade.

It was written 20 years ago lmao

The production is generic, not the song writing.

Abolition of Man is a great new version though. The rougher style suits it well.

Yeah the live show vocals comparison is a bad one to make. I don't expect artists to sound the same live as they would on a studio album that came out 20 years ago. Plus at a live show I'm enjoying the show and atmosphere, not sitting at a desk with earbuds in.

I don't go to Coheed shows mad that Claudio can't sing A Favor House Atlantic the same way he sounds on the album but it's still fun to hear it live and sing along. I don't think a re-recorded version of it would sound all that good though.

All That's Left is one of the highlights for me so far, first song where the guitar was also an improvement or more enjoyable to me.

Can't say which I dig more at this point but I don't think it matters, this is just a completely different album and it's great in its own right

“ Now they need to revisit Illusion of Safety”

Dustin said they recognize it as a unique thing and wouldn’t want to touch it. Whereas hearing this version of artist, it’s easier for me to understand how they became the band they grew into on Vheissu and beyond

I had no idea this was coming out. 'Stare at the Sun' and 'All That's Left' were my first two Thrice songs but I didn't really get into their full albums until The Alchemy Index, so I never formed as strong of a bond with The Artist in the Ambulance. I still like it quite a bit, so I'm interested in hearing this -- particularly that Andy Hull feature.

oh goodness no they should just leave illusion of safety alone. Without that ~youthful energy it wouldn't work.

This was the best choice to do something like this with imo

This is excellent. I wouldn't say it's much better or worse than the original, just different. Most bands would have butchered this.

For me, this is the version I didn't know I wanted. The original is awesome. It's carried me through every new disappointing Thrice album since, but the guitar riffs were muddy, the drums lacked some bottom end, and I did wish I could hear more bass guitar... despite that, I love the original but this brought out all my wishes so if I have to deal with an older Dustin, I am perfectly fine with that.

Maybe it's the register, but I initially thought there was a guest vocalist singing the chorus of "The Melting Point of Wax" because there isn't a bit of Dustin's raspiness there. He sings that part so smoothly. Wish he'd break that out a little more often.
