"working very hard on crafting a vision" should not preclude anyone from saying its bad/it sucks

what is going on in half of these tracks? why is this over 50 minutes long? why do I keep giving this band chances?

Extradite Reba to a better band [7]
Seriously, go let Jami be Trent Reznor Jr. and make all of his esoteric bullshit with the dj (slade, shade?) and let Reba "spread her wangs".
Or, they should hire a producer (Joe Duplanter of Gojira maybe?) who takes all their bells and whistles and locks them in a closet with their advance check and tells them that they'll get them back once the album comes out.

mirror is so good

Mirror is fantastic. I'd say I want a whole album of songs like that, but that would just be a new Code Orange Kids album and I think this band is too far gone for that to ever happen.

“You guys talk about Reba like she’s even good”
the tracks that shes more prominent on tend to be alot better than the ones that jami does

Jami runs the heavy shit and that’s the only reason I listen to this band. I’m not gonna throw on CO to listen to Mirror and finger my ass

I could see someone liking this if they never listened to other music

As someone who wrote two big fuckoff reviews for CO, here’s my take on the new record: it’s good! Really good for the most part, but something is kinda off. A big reason I loved Underneath was that I felt like the balance between technicality, heaviness, and catchiness was perfectly split, And for the first 7 tracks it does nail that balance. The last half feels a bit stitched together in that regard. There’s something off about Splinter the Soul going into The Game, Circle Through I’d probably cut altogether.
Billy Corgan actually had more involvement with the songwriting than just the cameo on Take Shape, Like while he was working on Atum during the day Jami, Reba, and Shade would meet up with him during the night and work on The Above. He really Corgs it up, especially on the last four tracks. Again, it’s not that his contributions are bad but the balance gets thrown off as it gets to the back half.

I had no idea he had involvement past that little feature.
That’s kinda cool I guess

Agreed the balance feels off however you slice this
Reviews seem to be all over the place on it tho which is fun: https://www.albumoftheyear.org/album/707258-code-orange-the-above.php#critics.
The RYM review currently up also seems to try and justify the decisions here by saying that CO are deliberately making fun of their own sound which is a weird fucking take but maybe???

Jami has admitted in an interviews that he has no idea what people like about his band and has no idea how this record is gonna pan. You can think the music sucks but they really are just making what they want to regardless of what people think
