I listened to a good chunk of this and it wasn't too bad. Slapped a 3 on it and walked away.

partially just my taste but I’m not super fond of all the poptimism staples like Charlie and CRJ. Not bad just overrated.

Idk, the poptimism movement was created for a reason and those albums were a large part of that. 20/20 is a different beast from a lot of them because it's almost like....progressive pop? He was aiming for these gargantuan songs with lots of movements that was really ambitious, but mostly outside of the scope of what pop normally is. All those other albums I mentioned were more emblematic of damn good pop, and I think the songs on those albums stand better as individual statements than most of 20/20.

Don't get me wrong, 20/20 1 does still rule, but I think it gets a lot of favor from the fact that its structured in an ambitious way. If you were to whittle those songs down to be more standard sub-four minute tracks, I don't think they would be nearly as good. They need the space and progression that's on the album in order to really work. Not saying one is better than the other, but I think the sorta novelty of 20/20 makes people think it's better than other pop contemporaries just on virtue of being different

What even is this argument

This is like saying "y'know if those Tool songs were 3 minutes long instead of 10, they wouldn't be nearly as good and as revered as they are now". Like no shit lmao

It's not just because it's ambitious, it's because the ambition works out for the majority of the album and creates an entirely different soundscape. It gives each song a hollistic experience where it exists in its own intricate and layered world that you can get lost in, and it's executed almost to perfection (I'm sure many would argue with that, but this is how I feel anyways)

If even sowing rates this a 2 it might just be a 1

I'd say you should probably listen to Technicolor from this album if you want to get the most 20/20 sounding JT since then. It's a decent song, would be a good deluxe track for 20/20 pt.1

And then maybe listen to No Angels or Fuckin' Up the Disco to get a feel for what this era of JT sounds like and skip if you don't want to hear any more.

you are correct that the albums can only be compared in the loosest sense of “pop,” charli and JT have pretty much nothing in common

closest thing i can think of to 20/20 is honestly mbdtf lmao. dude heard those arrangements and saw the track lengths and thought "what if this but pop?"

think imma skip this one... too many trusted users giving it bad ratings

I think the MBDTF comparison is a good one. It's this sorta luxurious, maximalist vibe that relishes in being able to sprawl out.

@Valkoor

I agree that 20/20 works well not only because of its ambition but also because of its execution. It's a great album and is absolutely worth a seat at the table of best pop album of the 2010's. My argument was that it gets a bit of tilt purely because it's kinda the only thing that occupies the space of ambitious, almost-prog pop or however you wanna describe it. As nol said, JT and Charli are only in the same genre by the loosest of conventions. I know that that's the point of the record in the same way that cutting a Tool song in half would be the dumbest of metrics, I just think that 20/20 does get a little tilt from being the only real attempt at that sort of thing that I can think of.

The 20/20 and MBDTF is interesting and was the straw that broke the camels back convincing me to listen to 20/20 again.

I am definitely not spinning this.

if you weren't on this site when mbdtf and 2020 dropped, they basically ruled the roost
