You get other acts a bit like this, say Rhye or Ry X, plus many dream pop bands, that despite staying firmly in their comfort zones don't get the same heat.
I think this band's biggest crime...-cliche incoming-...is being more popular than you'd maybe imagine they'd be. People don't like that, oh boy.
Can't think of many current bands with such an 'accepted established critical narrative' as this lot, can be hard to swim against that esp if you only have the time for a cursory listen.

It’s definitely the band name, the lasciviousness, the helium, the schtick and the package that brings this band down.
Album is well worth a listen though.

There are a load of 'personality stripped' more neutral bands out there doing dream pop torch song sort of stuff so I don't know - in terms of pure musical artistry they are limited at times, but the consistency of the settings and narrators is their thing and their niche, I wouldn't ditch that

‘Now then, now then little lady have you heard of cigarettes after sex ooh you should have now sit on my knee while I press play and I’ll fix it for you yes I certainly will and I’ll give you this nice badge that I will.’

Jimmy?
I always compare this band to Placebo - they'd both be nuthin without the androgyny

Jim would’ve spun ‘em

I think I need to give Cry another few listens...
Placebo nothing without the androgyny?! I loved those first few Placebo albums... sure the androgyny helped (a lot), but that slightly darker indie noise they made, and the weird-ass catchy lyrics that made no sense whatsoever...
Nancy Boy, Teenage Angst, 36 Degrees, Every You, Every Me, You Don't Care About Us, Slave to the Wage, The Bitter End, This Picture - they made some classic music...
time to go make a Placebo playlist for my run tomorrow morning

Placebo are great but without Molko's vocal style and lyrics they'd mostly be just another radio play courting Sonic Youth type alt rock act

Those guitar sounds though... I mean like at the start of Allergic - really did it for me. But yeah, Molko's voice and lyrics were essential.

Okay, this is my first time hearing this band while I spin this for the first time. It's definitely a vibe. I think I like it. Maybe?
Does he always sound this sleepy?

After first spin, it's alright. Seems kinda forgettable though, like it'll slip out of my mind before I know it. Maybe I'll give it another go at some point.
