This is the worst of the first four by a good margin yh

"it kinda does feel like they culled the wrong lessons from its success, lol"

Lol agreed hard. New one in particular is a pretty pale retread of this territory

CtS>BM>R>L>TH>OMRTS>EOS>HAG is how I go. This is pretty handily my favorite, bolstered in large part by a really long closer that actually rocks. (Only excellent closer in their discography tbh)

Never thought of that before, but mmmhm these guys do kinda suck at closers. The Last Baron recycles itself too much for my liking, but I guess it is one of their better endgames. Ain't no topping the Siberian Divide/Pendulous Skin combo on BM though

They got especially bad with finishing the job after this, though I’m a known hater on that long Leviathan track that I guess isn’t technically the closer. (Remission and Blood Mountain’s closers I’d rate at a “par for the course”.) “Jaguar God” is pretty good and “Gigantium” is ultimately fine, but I don’t like the Hunter closer and I kinda hate the Once More one

I think the Mingus situation is particular enough (don’t feel like re-explaining it) that I shouldn’t be assailed for employing “overrated” like yea obviously everyone likes a mix of stuff that’s putatively overrated and putatively underrated I’m sayin the overration of Mingus serves a particular function with regard to the reception of an entire genre that that of Mast-of-dawn doth not

My boy Geebz just dropped a video reacting/analyzing a few mastodon songs (including the last baron), if y’all are into this kinda thing.

The Czar is excellent and you’re like “Man, 10+ minute Masodon medleyfest, how could things get better and then “the last baron” comes around and you’re like Oh baby

nah this is definitely best mastodon, people act like this is a prog-rock album and for the most part it is, but there's heavy moments on here too like on Ghost of Karelia, what an awesome song that is.
