1. A.A.L [4.8/5]
2= Ben Howard/Eleanor Friedberger/Paddy Hanna [4.6-4.7]
5= Tropical Fuck Storm/Gurrumal [4.4-4.5]
7= Oneohtrix PN/Evil Blizzard/Idris Ackamoor [4.3]
That’s it so far, no massive releases on the horizon - a compilation in The form of the A.A.L could get AOTY

2. Car Seat Headrest (4.4)

4. Tribulation (4.3)
5. GoGoPenguin (4.2)
This year is so lackluster compared to last year's. ;(

Nah S. Carey is better than this, the melodies are more beautiful and flow a lot better and it has a more genuine atmosphere. This just feels pretty hollow to me.

Just because this is more upbeat doesn't make it hollow. I agree that Carey's atmosphere is more densely layered, but I don't think this is less genuine by any means. I also think the melodies here are far prettier.

(I say this with that S. Carey album at a 4, so I'm not disrespecting it)

enjoyed this the first time i heard it but it's so aggressively derivative and the lyrics grind on me now but still a very pretty listen

Sowing I think there are some fine elements here and the album is far from unpleasant most of the time - I just find it kind of cloying, the production is way too clean but lacking in depth, the melodies are (to my ears) really plain and sometimes awkward, and while I haven't focused on the lyrics whenever I notice one it's usually because of some combination of a) he's repeating the same line 20 times or b) the line is a platitude. (I tread on thin ice here however as one could level any of these arguments at my beloved War on Drugs.)
I won't stick around as the negative guy here though, if this album makes you happy that's awesome! I'll just be spinning A Deeper Understanding instead.

Fair enough. This isn't quite as good as the best that War On Drugs have to offer, but in my book it's at least on the same level.

He sings a lot like Snow Patrol = 2.5 ceiling
