tbh i think the more predictable dissonant style works fine cus it gels with the jazzier parts better

‘Atomic Age is unrestrained fucking genius’ (2)
Yeah the rhythms mesh well with the off-kilter zanier curve-balls this throws you, love the jazz and noir elements. Atmospherically it works, the production on this is stellar.

yeh production is wonderful, bass is so heavy and everything is as clear as it needs to be
atomic age, the greater good and excelsior are the big standouts to me

My problem with this isn’t that it’s dissonant, it’s that the actual choices of dissonant harmonies and riffs are very straightforward and bland if you’ve spent years listening to dissonant metal as I imagine most of the target audience for this has. There’s nothing that surprises me or expands my approach to harmony or composition the way EIF or FWTH or SMRC or outre does. On the other hand, there are a lot of out of the box rhythmic ideas here.

yeah, if I were directly comparing it to Ulcerate I'd feel the same but I think the intent here was quite a bit different.

Listening now, for some reason the first few seconds remind me of Blade Runner

On 2nd thought I don’t like this as much now because it doesn’t sound similar to Miles Davis.

yeh i mean i don't think this is a very riff-centric album
it's got a few slappers like that car bomb sorta riff in the greater good

Demon/shadow, my comparison isn’t stylistic, only a comment in complexity and originality. Harmonic dissonance is boring if it’s not executed at a very high level

It's hard to measure. It's really down to your taste and ear. I don't think dissonant playing is beholden to some other standard than consonant playing. It's just notes. It just IS. And dissonance is equally valid to consonance. I think there's lots of weird but smart playing on this record. The trem bar manipulation and the subtle bends and slides give it a very particular feel. A lot the chords remind me of dirtier jazz voicings. I like the odd noises he finds too.

yea that’s how I’ve always felt about this band, the compositions are fun mostly and the drum/bass/vocals are awesome. The guitar playing is cool too especially the tone but the guy always stretches and draws out a riff or passage for too long and it’s not even like he is improvising or altering it. He can definitely come up with some tight riffs (the last track) but they almost always overstay their welcome. The production and effects hold up the guitar playing and they just feel bare bones after a couple of listens tbh. This band has always been good at sounding consuming and grand at prima facia but once you take it apart it gets a little gimmicky imo. I know it’s not about the riffs, it’s about the whole package, but for how complex and esoteric they come off as I think the criticism is fair. Regardless, the music sounds wicked and that’s what I’m here for
