"The Alien is probably my favourite track on here, love the harmonising guitars from Petrucci during the intro and outro so much."
Definitely one of my faves here too. I love how crazy the intro is

Yeah it's good, Source.
About on the same level as DOT, solid stuff.

i don't know whether james is a hero or an idiot for destroying his voice in the 90s

Wasn't an infection or a food poisoning that damaged his voice? I also want to know if he practices, takes lessons, etc. or if he's just cashing the check.

yeah and he continued doing shows while he had it, shredded his voice

damn, overworking is never a good idea. Another victim of the music industry and productivity paranoia.

he definitely still practices. if you listen to his live performances around 1998 right after his accident, he sounded *terrible*. so he's done a ton of work to repair his voice back to serviceable, and he sounded pretty good through the 2000s before age took over.

I feel bad for LaBrie, because almost every discussion about his voice brings up the food poisoning incident. He's never been able to live that down, and it's gotta suck having everyone compare and contrast your voice to the effects of an illness that was completely out of your control. His output throughout the discography has been pretty solid, and I couldn't care less if he's able to hit the higher notes on the earlier albums during live shows. Imo it's impressive enough that he has the endurance at his age to sing the material for as long as their shows are. It was just cringe whenever he gruffed it up and tried to sound metal on albums like Train of Thought.

It's a Dream Theater album. Better than some of their recent efforts but it's so cookie cutter at this point. I don't think these guys could make an album that didn't sound that way even if they tried.

Lol I don't know what's wrong with sticking to a certain sound. Do you expect a band to evolve drastically after 30 years?

Interestingly Fates Warning also has the same, melancholic prog metal style for the last 25 years yet their albums manage to sound fresher than DT.
