Them melodies get you in the end.

Ok but merely having melodys is hardly enough to indicate a return to form lmao

If he hadn’t made The Now Now or Song Machine, I’d call this a return to form.
|
| |
Literally how
And what do the existence of now now and song machine have to do with it
|
| |
Gorillaz isn’t even satire anymore, there’s no edge, no bite, no sardonic twist, no enigma, it literally just bland commercial pop. Gorillaz has become what they originally set out to parody. It’s the complete opposite of a return to form.

Pots literal embodiment of the "Stop having FUUUNNNNNN" meme rn

Im just interested in hearing an actual explanation for that sentiment because I disagree with it whole-heartedly that’s what this site is for super chief
|
| |
I don’t have a problem with people casually enjoying this vapid era of Gorillaz at all but the idea of this being a “return to form” just strikes me as a severe misunderstanding of what Gorillaz stood for and set out to do in the 2000’s
It also doesn’t help that Damon seems completely out of touch with every kind of sub culture going on atm

I just mean personally I would’ve considered this a return to form if Now Now and Song Machine didn’t exist because then the only albums since PB would’ve been The Fall and Humanz which were both meh imo

I just think that with a band like Gorillaz there is a lot more to that than simply making “good” music. Sure, if this was just some pop artist then that could be the standard and I wouldn’t be so critical, but I feel strongly that there is a much higher bar than that for a project that once hinged on certain values and heavy conceptualization

it's not that it's bad, it's just that it's not good enough and it's maybe their worst or most disappointing album. feels like a b-sides compilation. still, it's enjoyable.

I am not enjoying

yeah, cause it's a boring joy, because it's not good enough
|

No joy, just deep pain and sadness. At least with the last few there have been some diamonds in the rough. There is not a single song here that I like. I guess the tame Impala track is the closest thing to a good song and I’d give that like a 3/5 max. I really really deeply hate this.
