"...But this time with the new record, we went the other extreme and basically said that the one rule is that there are no rules. If we want to have a section that’s metal as fuck with screams and stuff, we just go on and fucking lay the heavies down. If we want to have a section that’s incredibly pretty and catchy to the point of being poppy, lay it down. They can both live side by side on the same album and what’s more, that’s what makes the album great and dynamic and fun to listen to. It obviously required a lot more work on the production side of things to make it all work together and sound cohesive, but was really very liberating to be able to just wear your heart on your sleeve and be honest with what you’re putting out, as opposed to trying to project an image for yourself that only expresses one aspect of what you want to say with your songs.”
I am stoked. New record is done, and they truly sound like they've made the record they've always wanted to make. One of my most anticipated albums of the last few years. Hell, we've been waiting for years since those early singles. Can't wait to hear what they sound like after being re-recording and having the band even *more* happy with them.

After reading the whole interview, I have so much faith in this album.
Sound Awake is one of my favs. I think Forrester did that? I have a lot of respect for a band who has the restraint to without a very imminent release to make sure it sounds perfect and to not just settle with a sound. Money well spent, I imagine, going to him.
What they released in 2015/2016 with Eric sounded sooooo good, and to think, those might be mixes they weren't happy with? Wow. Guiding Lights is almost perfect to me, but it could have benefited from the diversity they speak of in the interview. To imagine them taking the sound they already had, and progressing as songwriters even more, and having it produced by a master, that sounds like my perfect record.
It help that, ever year that passes, I enjoy more and more mellowed-out metal. To have their already-great sound inclusive of both borderline-pop and heavier stuff than they've ever done....hhhhhng

I did miss some of the balls out riffing from BWL. Trayus is still one of my favourite songs from the album. But I'm not convinced that Emery is in the same league as Tomkins or even as the rest of the band at this point. He struggles mightily live and the 2 singles they've put out with Emery just haven't been very memorable.

Very interesting read! I found this record a bit boring, and I'm curious if I'll be able to like Sunshine Dust

Sounds like Sunshine Dust will be a much more varied album, so you'll probably find something on there you like.

It's pretty good and we finally have a final release date.
Eric is a very worthy replacement for Dan and his upper range is incredible

I think he will become better live. From the livevids i saw he looked like he was under some form of stress, i don't think he struggles with the notes per se

Saw them on the tour with Contortionist and he sounded great there, but they only played like 5 songs which I thought was odd. Must have been under a strain or time-crunch.

Emery has been with the band for about 3 years now. I've seen Skyharbor live twice since he joined them and the only Dan-era song he owned was Trayus.

i hope the band gets back to this level.
