Yea Toondude this probably wasn't the best place to start. I'd go with We're Here Because We're Here or Judgement.
|
| |
^ These were also my first Anathema albums. Judgement lays the groundwork to get into their earlier stuff.

to be fair I did enjoy quite a bit of this so I'm looking forward to hearing their previous stuff. Springfield was probably my favorite.

Hard to go wrong with this band, anything from A4 to WS is just fantastic.

I mean if checking out entire discog I'd leave WHBWH for the end ... their magnum opus ...

Alternative 4 is a great intro to this band, and Judgment right after.

Alternative 4 is essential, but not as the first due to some of its weirder tracks.

I don't remember much weirdness to it, just some overdone vocals

The title track is really weird without a question. Most of the other ones not so much, but for the standards of the band, probably
I think Judgement is a fine start. It's more or less the centerpiece of their career. The first one with Danny as main song-writer, carrying over the gloomy mood of the two precursors, but also offering a lot of glimpses of the beautiful alternative rock that was yet to come. It's the perfect middle point of everything and clearly their magnum opus imo

I think new listeners could handle it haha but regardless they could start most anywhere, their sound is always changing

Yeah, definitely. The early doom stuff could be a bit hard to stomach for people who aren't involved in the genre and Eternity has some very odd vocal moments that are all but representative of his later performances (even though it has its charme the way it is), but from Alternative 4 on, any album should do. There's hardly any other band that has put out such an amount of passionate and convincing material, just stunning

Since I've heard WHBWH and up I think I'll move backwards towards their older releases starting from A Natural Disaster. Instead on hearing the evolution, I'll be hearing the devolution lol

A Natural Disaster is probably my fav.

Strangely i feel like if it had the logo of the last few albums on this id like it more.
Dont know why, it makes no logical sense.
I can see why the change, musically especially Leaving it Behind, i feel its far more akin to the sound of AFDTE which is the idea i guess haha.
Endless Ways however sounds very much like the last few, but i love it.
The golden run for me is Endless Ways through to Springfield, love all those tracks.
Ghost isnt bad.
The last tracks to be trurthful are a little take it or leave it for me.
I just feel the second side lacks a real standout.
Im not a huge wrap for BTTStart, it has a real sort of formulaic sound to it, that kind of epic end, im not sure it just doesnt do it for me.
The strength of the first 7 tracks though is undeniable and overall im happy with the album.
Just want a stronger track near the end. But thats just me.

this really does not end strongly.

It stops flowing as well as it does in the middle few songs, but I don't feel like the quality dips all that much at the end. Last song is great.
