Listening to this again - I think it doesn't take enough risks. Like, I reckon the best part of the album is the chorus on Digital Light Field where you that discordant, jarring synth propelled by a beat that just cuts through the song, and you get this real feeling of elevation that's just so cool. But there's nothing quite like that again on the album, which does much better with melody than it does with rhythm.
Hollowmaker has that distant, blaring horn that opens it, but then it gets wrapped up in sweet melody and you lose that unnerving effect again. But that's maybe just 'cause I like that feeling of 'darkness' better.
So now that I think about it, another artist I can compare this to is Glasser, who I think I like alot better because her work is more rhythmic and dancy.
