Will give RDF the first proper listen when my copy arrives later. Jennifer sounds just as brilliant now as it did live, one of Jon's finest songwriting moments I reckon.

gone back to their old sound no one used to like...now everyone likes it, dunno
has a similar feel to the debut
this sounds a bit like them gone Hot Chip (squelchy nerd-electro) plus similar to AnCo's 'Painting With' instead of repetitive hocketing the same quickfire vocal thing is used every song.
I don't hate it but I'm not sure it's what I wanted...but they had played out the Radiohead'isms so fair enough.

I’m on the brink of proclaiming it their best but at the same time I think it could shed one or two tracks

Eek, I can say already it’s nowhere near my favourite - I never liked the debut much though and some people swear by that one
Be interesting how this one grows on me

I just think there are a lot of very well put together tracks, it leans less on pop cliches and benefits from having less of the “rapping” we’re used to. ticks all the EE boxes for me

As their first foray into full blown pop it's a winner

It’s ok, I like Hot Chip and a lot of the instrumentals and some of the backing vox melodies remind me of them.
The debut was their first foray into pop I’d say - no song here is as good a pop song as ‘Photoshop Handsome’, not even close.
Just no bite and cynicism, hooks aren’t so amazing I can accept having next to no edge. A pleasant dud for me so far, prob a 3 out of 5.
At least it’s a different direction from the last three and seems a lot of people dig it.

new album struck me more as a dance sort of pop record as opposed to the rock band setup brand of pop that say Man Alive utilized
in that regard it's a success. involuntarily bobbed along to it nearly the whole time and the hooks are already stickier than most of what's on this, for instance

Violent Sun is better than every song on the new one that’s without question and I’d say a few others are being underrated in that assessment
Other than the opener (which is still a weak’ish opener for an EE album) I most like tracks 11, 12 and 14 which calls for a patient listen. Leviathan is nice too.
Jennifer sounds a bit like Bloc Party to me, solid indie track but not knocked for six by it - prefer Kevin’s Car so far

New album might be their best. I need to give it time, but first impressions were surprisingly good. Wipes the floor with this one for sure.

I have no idea where it places in their discography yet but it's a fantastic album that only gets better with each listen. They've really outdone themselves here. I do wonder what this album would sound like if it had RDF's production; it's probably their best sounding album ever, I can see why Alex is so proud of it.

I like that this album is getting more and more underrated.
I'm a sucker for the Radiohead'isms on this - 'It Was a Monstering' is better than 'Weird Fishes' there I said it, deal with it :D
Seriously though, I went back to this yesterday and I'd say it's still very good - new one is a bit duff in the middle stretch other than the ballad 'Leviathan'

3. Software Greatman [4]
4. Leviathan [4]
5. Teletype [4]
6. Jennifer [4]

9. I Want a Love [3.5]
10. Pizza Boy [3.5]
11. Metroland [3]
12. Cut Up [3]
13. Hex [3]
14. Born Under a Meteor [3]
This ranked/rated...
1. Violent Sun [5]
2. In Birdsong [4.5] (maybe should be a 5)
3. It Was a Monstering [4.5]
4. Arch Enemy [4.5]
5. Big Climb [4]
6. Moonlight [4]
7. Lost Powers [4]
8. Planets [4]
9. Lord of the Trapdoor [3.5]
10. Black Hyena [3]
11. The Actor [3]
New one would have been improved dropping four songs and maybe adding one better song in their place :/
Best two songs on the last one are better than any songs on the new one, that's super clear to me. 'Violent Sun' was a post-lockdown anthem supreme
