I don't know what most think but to me, a review is supposed to explain all of the main elements. He writes two paragraphs on the expectations of this album and on comparisons of this to other albums but doesn't talk about drumming or bass. I don't see the description of a main insturment as "absolutely everything." I can see skipping a small violin part or somthing but not the drumming on a metal album.

Well, tbh lots of reviews don't mention bass. Yeah, most mention drums, but I don't think it was really necessary with this album since the drumming is very standard.

Bass isn't important but not to mention that and drumming make two insturments not mentioned. I just don't think this review was anything more than going against the popular and hyped album.

Whatever i was just saying that people bashing this review may be for reasons other than the being fanboys.

The whole third, fourth, and fifth paragraphs do nothing but describe the album. This band is guitar and vocal oriented. He described what was necessary to give you an overall sound of the album.

In the last paragraph he justifies his rating. He said without the long songs it could have been a 2 or 2.5 at the most. You are supposed to try and be fair and objective in a review, which is why he gave some redeeming points. If he didn't say anything good at all about the album you guys would be complaining that he didn't mention one positive about it.

No way this deserves a one. I can think of 50 albums that are far worse than this. But Mikes reviews are always good so I can't argue against him. He does justify his word well. Still, I can certainly see where willfellmarsy is coming from.

I downloaded and listened to this album, and really, I can't agree with this review more. This music is absolutely terrible; I cannot understand why it's so popular.

I bought this, thinking hopefully this will have something amazing. It's not a one, but I can see Mike's opinion clearly through the review, however his comments don't add up to quite as low as a one in my view. Determining by previous releases by the band, this is a journey into something that I think they needed to have gained through at least a couple of albums.

I cannot help but think though - while we have the die hard Machine Head fanatics here trying to postulate feeble arguments, the same can be said for those who are so blind to defend Mike in a similar fashion. Granted, Mike is a respected reviewer, and a great guy, and this particular review doesn't warrant negative votes (apart from the odd unnecessary comment that adds nothing to the review, or my perception of the audio content while reading it).

But I do feel that some of the defensive arguments (not naming any names or generalise) for Mike are merely to show a cohesion to the general conception that if Mike (or any other respected reviewer, including staff) gives something a low rating, it grants users to freely back that individual due to their position above the rest.

I've read so many of these arguments over various releases (not to sound superior), and have found this to be the case numerous times. I've said it before, but there's too many people on this site (in my view) that express too much of one quality and not enough of another; objectivity and opinion. Both are of equal importance, and both seem to be either neglected, or smothered by blind reservation.

Glad to have got that of my chest.

P.S

The whole thing above about not mentioning drumming and bass is stupid.

This was an average album.

I heard it in it's entirety once whilst cooking myself dinner, that took an hour.

On my second listen I had to skip the first song around 4 minutes in, far too long and no real direction, climax or anything, just a rambling mess.

Most of the album was the same.

Meh, they seem to be another band that have gotten a bigger fanbase all of a sudden, but they'll disappear soon enough.
