All the albums are kinda poppy in their own way but no world for tomorrow has kind of a hair metal vibe sometimes which is just yuck

and You've Got Spirit isn't?

I'm normally drawn to the super chessy stuff sometimes though, especially if there's a story involved. I'm kind of a dork like that occasionally.

15 year old me wants to hear the leak, but modern me knows I'll be disappointed. I've been jamming these guys for the past week or so just for the nostalgia. I want to be pumped for this since I've never outright disliked a Coheed album (I loved YotBR in particular), but I've been so turned off by the singles. Here To Mars in particular is a cringefest of trite lyricism and overblown bombast that I personally just can't get into. I don't want to say I've 'grown out' of this band because I genuinely do still love a few tracks from SSTB, YotBR and GA1, but I dunno. Someone please reassure me that this record is at least decent.

It's far better than Descension and NWFT and probably tops YOTBR too

i'm not sure where it will rank yet. the highs are extremely high (island, atlas), but it also has a total dud (young love), which is rare for them. it could grow on me though

Yeah Young Love is truly pretty awful, the best songs are definitely exceptional though. Why aren't more people talking about Colors and Ghost

colors is pretty great, builds so well. ghost almost feels like an interlude to me but it flows really nicely

I love Ghost a lot, super chill ambient vibes, new sound for them and it's fantastic

Descension is a hard 2.5

Sentry the Defiant gets me standing on my desk and shouting at least 60% of the time. And I always thought at least 4-5 of the other songs were vintage, as well.

But some of that might have been determination to love it with the Josh Eppard rejoined nostalgia still in full swing, but whatever the reason, it translated to love for both the Afterman records, more than two before it, maybe more than FFTtEoM

Yeah man I feel you. Pretelethal, Sentry, Number City all hard jams, Gravity's Union probably top 10 Coheed but holy fuck it falls off hard after that

The Hard Sell is a tacky Another Brick Pt. 2 rip off, Iron Fist is just so OH LOOK AT MY DELICIOUS PAIN and Dark Side/2's My Favorite 1 are cheesy to the point of unlistenability

If they'd combined the best songs of the two records they probably could've had a FFTE, even SSTB-level record maybe??

MAN YOUR OWN JACKHAMMER

Actually, I agree. If you took the best tracks off both Ascension & Descension, just call it The Afterman, make it one album... It'd be pretty damn good. As it stand, both albums have some great tracks (the ones you names, Rowan) and some weaker tracks as well. Descension in particular really falls off on the second half.

Honestly I wish they would spruce up their demos. Those would have been killer tracks on the album. Taking your track listing, the only thing I would chance is:

Instead of Subtraction put "The Homecoming" and "Pretelethal".

Put "Carol Ann" somewhere in the early middle.

End with "Random Reality Shift" or put it right before "2's my Favorite 1".

Alright I'll bump this a little bit. There's nothing really bad about it as a whole. Just not really my cup of tea.
