Violator is for BDSM nights, Songs of Faith and Devotion are the consequences of those nights and longing to grow, develop, and change before it is too late. It was the absolute breaking point for the band. Gahan almost died from his addiction to heroin. Gore was struggling with alcoholism and as a result had "stress-induced seizures." Fletcher left in the middle of touring for this album due to severe anxiety attacks. Wilder left the band and it has never been the same since imo.
It is the most consequential album in their discography, but it doesn't feel even close to as pyrrhic of an album compared to Ultra or Playing the Angel does for the band imo. Ultra led to Exciter, the worst album in their discography imo; Playing the Angel is their last masterpiece and they haven't released a song nearly as listenable as "Precious" since.
