I find this album to be a lot like watching a classic movie like the godfather or Casablanca. The first time you watch/ listen to it it seems cliche.

Then you realize it seems that way only because you see, hear, feel, whatever, it in not just jazz music in rock in rap in noise music hell you can feel reference to this in metal.

A marvelous piece of art, perhaps the best ever.

ya they should 5 it. But ya that and when people have just have Beethoven's 9th really bugs me. It really makes people look pretentious.

Blue in Green and Flamenco Sketches are the highlights as they have lots of feeling and some interesting turns of phrase at times. The rest though feels like filler, undemanding but sounding beautiful enough to make it ok for those who just want something that sounds nice. So this is obviously above average but surely in no way a classic album.

Here's an interesting article on the album:

interesting article, but those points dont really detract from the album. unless, like some over-zealous critics, you hold the album on some kind of 'greatest ever' pedestal.

I'm not one of those over-zealous fans of the album that say that.

I really wonder if this is that great an introduction to jazz anyway. Some will be put off by it as some tracks don't have much happening. Others won't want to explore more challenging music as they will feel that this is how jazz should be.

that 'you' wasnt necessarily meant to be yourself.

i think this is a great introduction to jazz, and therefore explains its massive popularity. it was easy to understand for the rock guys, and still appealed to all jazz vets with the great musicianship. the album does achieve an understated brilliance, which i think some may see as boring or perhaps not as inspiring as something more driving or technically challenging.

i think if you showed a person something by peter brotzmann, albert ayler, or even later coltrane works, when they havent listened to jazz before, then they would be more turned off than listening to this.

also it is not a pre-requisite for all jazz to be 'demanding' to be truly great.

What about an earlier Coltrane work like 'Giant Steps"? I think that had more potential to be the big hyped jazz album for the uninitiated.

...yeah it does and thats why its one of his most popular. i was saying that later coltrane and the others were more challenging to listen to, meaning that its more likely for a listener to be turned off by them, rather than something like kind of blue.

have you ever wanted to post a starry comment? copy and paste this into a thread for any album that is generally recognized as a classic or a gateway album for a genre and you can be starry too!

hey guys, _______ really isn’t that good and i feel that the critics have put it on a pedestal at the expense of other albums in the genre. i mean it’s okay but i’ve heard better and i don’t understand why they decided to single this particular album out for such high praise. hey guys have you heard of ______ ? maybe not as well known as this album but i feel it is a better example of the genre
