He's definitely accentuated the blues in rhythm n' blues - most of these songs have a bluesy guitar strum in the background, does it sound like the future? Maybe

Yeah sure, it is. But it's so lifeless and boring to me. Not huge into rnb, but Channel orange packed some jams. This just doesn't do much for me. I mean it's not actively bad, his voice is still good, some lyrics are poignant, but overall it sounded nondescript to me.

yeah the life is in the subtleties and the "realness" of the feels if you will, not something that would appeal to someone not normally into rnb

prob my fave of the genre since the weeknds 2011 run

channel orange was good too but a lot more inconsistent and directionless imo

I didn't get the realness so much, and when you're adding those skits and quoting an Elliott Smith lyric that alludes to suicide...no. Undoes a lot of good will.

I very rarely get the value of skits

how are the skits not real, one is about his mom warning him about drugs and bad people, which frank puts a comic/ironic spin on with the first line of the next track saying he's gone off acid or whatever. it definitely fits his life since he's basically a huge stoner and it's readily apparent in all of his music, he's p open about it. perhaps what he's saying is that it's okay momma (shout out to the last song when he in fact tells his momma he made it), and that the drugs did / do not hold him back. or maybe there is a bit of guilt and shame there about his lifestyle when he thinks of his mom. not sure

the facebook story gets one thinking about the influence of social media on modern relationship

and the suicide quote, i mean who knows what goes on in his head but i've read he does struggle with sort of depressive tendencies which is part of the reason he goes into long periods of hiatus and that. sure it might seem silly to think of a good looking fashionable rnb superstar as someone who could be depressed but it can happen to anyone

Sounds cheap to me, it's just the way it comes across. There's no way Ocean is toying with suicide so why use that lyric, the dude will probably live to 90, it's just an awful awful pick. The way he delivers the line is boring too. It's just real sucky. A more suitable Smith lyric I'd forgive.

Why?

The skits not only sound jarring and annoying but they hammer the themes home and land with a splat between humorous and profound (in the context of the album themes) and end up just 'eh, will program these out next spin'

you'll never fully grasp the life experiences or mental environment of any other person than yourself doof

i don't mean to sound rude or anything saying that, but it's true. everybody has a story, everybody handles life's struggle's differently and with varying resiliency

as if you can just jump in on two album's of the dude's music and give them a couple of listens and decide what mental issues he has. I honestly thought better of you dude

Ed - That's not the feeling I get from the rest of the material here, he never seems at that point, Smith actually killed himself. Im sure Ocean has his demons but you've got to be careful, feels like an emotional hijack

you don't have to actually kill yourself to write about being suicidal, obviously. Johnny Cash didn't kill himself but he still covered Hurt and many people think it's even better than the original and why does this even need to be explained

I'm criticising his skills then, it sticks out like a turd in a sandpit, it just sounds 'heavier' than the other sentiments he expresses.

The sentiments can be real or fake, I'm judging the art, it shouldn't be that incongruous and ring phoney - that's the musical criticism. Personally, I also think it's a cheap emotional plunder

i think that's a more reasonable stance doof i can see that, the album in general while introspective isn't overly "down" in tone
