"chart-topping, pop-sellout singles"
"point. Their hit singles are just bad songs, whether they're the songs the bands are supposed to be playing or not. "Starlight" and "Supermassive Black Hole," although they have proved to successful in the charts, are terrible songs"
jesus you're insufferable

Forgot I brought up how bad those songs were in the review already lol. Still, you see what I was getting at.

Another great review. If you don't like the album, that's fine. We don't all have to like the same stuff
|

Supermassive Black Hole kinda blows, but I actually like Starlight

that wasn't my point, i get this feeling when i read your posts/review that you lack the self-awareness to realize your opinions aren't based on fact. e.g. decrying a song for being a "pop-sellout single" makes it clear that for you, pop = bad, which is fine except that you're making sweeping judgments about the quality of the song itself based on the genre the song is in. you're criticizing muse not for picking bad songs but for not picking songs in the genre that appeals to specifically you---and that only works if you have the self-awareness to know "OK maybe starlight isn't a bad song inherently but i prefer their rockier songs."
and yes starlight is a pretty solid song. if you want a bad, poppy song, listen to madness up until (and including) the guitar solo. that song has literally no drive forward or anything and just meanders up until the ending of the worst guitar solo the band has ever done---though it picks up after the solo ends. i mean you might disagree with my description and think they're equally bad or starlight is worse and that's fine but like that's not the impression your reviews/post have been giving off, yeah? because you don't want to elaborate on how bad some of these songs are beyond them being poppy and/or sellout songs.

Time is Running Out and Hysteria were pretty big hits back in 04. They're still pretty good tracks, no matter how big they were

Toxin: I really hadn't thought of that before...that is a damn good point you make and nice advice to go along with. This is
actually my first non-metal review, so I had a bad feeling I was going to end up criticizing songs because songs because I
dislike the genre they were conveying. For future reference, I will try to avoid doing that. I appreciate you pointing that out to
me, obviously I still have a bit of growing to do as a reviewer.
greenlinkinmuse: I agree. I didn't dislike some of the songs they played on this album because they popular, it was because
of their quality. I pointed out how much I liked Hyster and it was disappointing this album didn't include Time Is Running Out.

Panic Station and Follow Me are fucking abysmal. I hoped maybe, with their excellent live prowess, they could improve on it.
I couldn't have been more wrong.

You raise a good point.

muse's setlists have been quite good as of late, rather surprisingly
lots of b-sides and citizen erased etc.
|
| |
Solo in Madness is just painfully bad

adarkishman: that's true actually. Their setlist was great when I saw them live. They played Bliss, New Born, Stockholm Syndrome, and all a lot less of The Resistance era songs. The only really terrible song they played was Undisclosed Desires.

I wouldn't even call Madness a solo...

True, it's more of a pathetic fizzle

Ugh, yeah it is bad

Sounds like random improv followed by a failed attempt to play Sweet Child O Mine.
|
| |
I actually kinda like the song outside of that though
|
| |
ending goes hard but the rest is just so lukewarm
|
| |
It's a fair sight better than most of the album though
|
| |
yeah it's like a 2.5 among lots of 1-1.5 material
