also, i don't see how you could possibly be bored by WFIKTDB if you enjoy their later stuff, it's far more interesting. listen to the break of autumn, one of the greatest songs they ever recorded

I think you raise a very valid point when you mention the "dry and grating" and "bone-chilling" atmosphere. A lot of people try to excuse bad production quality by saying, "Oh, it adds to the atmosphere!" I agree to an extent. A lot of extreme metal albums from the first half of the 90's have a particular atmosphere that would be ruined by enhanced production quality. Often, though, I feel like it's a cop out.
TRITSIO certainly has an legitimate atmosphere; in my head I picture myself alone in the attic of an old, wooden house in the middle of the night. It is cob-web ridden, and I feel very uneasy.
At the same time, TRITSIO is a somewhat technical effort, so it does not benefit from sloppy recording/production technique. Honestly, TRITSIO seems to be slightly at or over the limit of which they were able to play at the time. Listen to the violin at the end of the first track; it's horrible!
Remember, technicality does not necessarily reflect good songwriting, just as simplicity does not necessarily reflect bad songwriting.
I'm giving WFIKTDB another spin right now.

assuming you're actually referring to TRITSIO (not TSD), i love that violin piece.
might not be the most technical violin ever but it's ripe with feeling and transitions perfectly into kingdom gone
if you're listening to WFIKTBD make sure it's through headphones so you really pick up on the subtleties between the two guitar tracks

Sorry, I fixed the comment. I was referring to their first album when I wrote that.
I just finished WFIKTBD, and though I honestly now like it more than before, I think it's their weakest release. I'll hear a good riff or lead in a song, but then they'll instantly go on to something else. They never stay in the same place long enough.

don't give up on it yet though, it will grow on you the more you listen to it

Digging this album very much lately

Though the early stuff are ungodly, the bands's latter stuff are still worthy of praise. I actually like this more than Slaughter of the Soul (still a good album).

WFIKtBD is excellent. The riffing is similar to the later albums in a way but the songs are so much more involved. There are so many more riffs in each song and they don't all climax on a breakdown. I love the later stuff too, but it's a shallower love, built on instant gratification. With Fear... is soul mate kinda stuff.

I hate it when bands can't figure out a good way to end an album/add length to it so they just throw on live tracks or a cover as the last track. Really drags this thing down for me, which sucks so much because the six original songs are all fantastic.

It's pretty damn cool, grown tired of SotS over the years tbh and have warmed to their earlier work more.
