Sowing, you've never failed me so far with your ratings... I've never strongly disagreed with your scores as far as I can remember, so I'll check this out after all. Maybe I'll be surprised.

So "Out of the Woods" is actually a good song... I guess I have to listen to the rest of this tomorrow now.

Yeah man "Out of the Woods" is one of the best on here. As long as you don't expect everything to be that good, I don't think you'll be disappointed.

I agree that the lyrics for Shake it Off are pretty clumsy/awkward, but kind of likable for it too

I'm going to give this some more listens, but right now I'm insanely disappointed. All the reviews talked this up as being very unique because it's so genuinely retro, but honest to god all I could think about when listening to this album is "Last Friday Night" by Katy Perry. This sounds like any modern pop artist trying to be 80's, it doesn't sound genuinely retro to me at all. Also, since it seems the focus is more on the production and instrumentation this time around, it feels a lot less personable to me than her other albums. I am a huge Swift fan, would more listens of this be a good idea, or is it a you get what you get kind of deal?

Shake it Off is such a great instrumental, and I dig the overall theme of the lyrics, but I feel like it would have been better with lines better than "haters gonna hate hate hate hate" and "players gonna play play play play" I mean come on.

More listens always help, and I agree it isn't very retro - but to me that's a good thing. She's staying relevant with what she's doing, and the ideas that influence this album are way better than 80s music IMO.

4.3 my ass

My infatuation with Ms. Swift goes way back, and I'm probably slightly biased, but I stand by my rating. This is as good as pop albums get nowadays.

There's no way this is that good. Just seems like she's copying superior indie pop artists. She'll probably be hailed for being super original and bringing a fresh sound to a dying genre or some other stupid nonsense...blah blah blah.

"She'll probably be hailed for being super original and bringing a fresh sound to a dying genre or some other stupid nonsense."

Almost certainly, just like Paramore's s/t was. That said I'm listening to this now and it's pretty pleasant to be honest.

lol no. "Shake it off" is the worst thing, a insincere and vapid statement if I ever heard one. "Haters

gonna hate hate hate, players gonna play play play, I just gonna shake shake shake..."

Taylor Swift sounds like the teenage girl she was 7-8 years ago on this song. The "rapping" on the song is

also unforgivable.

Taylor Swift did not do what she was meant to do, she just finally gave in to the pressure and became a

lady

gaga, katy perry, miley cyrus knock off who has barely any personality left.

"as an adult who has matured rather noticeably since writing [....]"

I'm sorry. but no. How are lyrics like "haters gonna hate hate hate, players gonna play play play" any

more mature. They are just a different brand of immature.

I'll just say that using 'her' to describe the transformation feels very naive to me. Max Martin has his hands all over this album- I'd be surprised if Taylor even had a guitar credit. I don't think she'd knowingly access Lorde, Lana and CHVRCHES to come up with these compositions. If anything, this album is the sum of her personalities, distilled and homogenized for mass (like, everyone alive) consumption. I still like it, but I rarely ever see "Taylor Swift" on it

Yeah because it conforms to a trend it must be awful.

Was she not conforming to a trend on her old albums? I'd love to hear an explanation about how original Fearless or Speak Now was.
