I'm starting to realise this band have ten or so absolute quality albums

Album Rating: 4.5
My feelings on some of their albums so far:
Either Or - the band at their most composed and the depressing stuff is immense. Vocally nicely diverse [5]
Soho - thematically perfect, great atmosphere, a few weaker moments though. [4.5]
Births Marriages Deaths - debut could go up in my estimations, great variety, some almost normal songs [4-5]
Freak show - ultimate Carny elephant man silliness, most of it is absolute classic [4-5]
Ad Nauseum - comedy stuff, some of it hilarious [3.5-4.5]
Bad Blood Blasphemy - very sick, patchy but more often than not amusing [3.5-4.5]
A Dream Turns Sour - war poetry put to music...some is quite funny, some is quite moving :/ [3/5]
Love for Sale - dumb 'almost covers', so stupid it's sometimes funny! My heart belongs to dadda! [2.5]

damn, looks like I've got a lot to listen to then.
Doof how come you have Soho at a 4.5 if its a 5 and Either Or at a 5 if its a 4.5?

I mucked up there, Either Or is my favourite so far. It may get switched with another one as I get to know them better, it's definitely at least a 4.5
|
| |
I keep thinking you're talking about Elliott Smith
|
| |
Despite the heaping praise you're throwing on this band Doof I'm kinda wary of them, doesn't really sound like my kind of thing.

@Boney I dont know Boney, from what I know about your taste I'd say theres a solid chance you'll find something worth your time here. And if I'm wrong its certainly quite a unique listen, enjoyable solely for broadening ones musical experience

I always hoped there were an 'x-rated circus freaks meet Monty Python' band like this, who were genuinely as funny as this.
The songs about Jesus in particular are beyond belief (way beyond Python).
The song 'Murder' creases me every time.

I'm loving these albums, but I have no idea how to rate them... There really isn't anything else like them to compare.

Album Rating: 4.5
I agree, rating them is proving a challenge...they're too musical to be classed as purely comedy albums...but a huge proportion of the appeal of their songs is in the humour.
I've listened to 15 of their 30 albums so far, I think I might be going crazy.

Downloaded Either Or. Gonna check this first tho

FoS - Either Or is depressing as all hell so if that doesn't tickle you and you want fun instead go for 'Freakshow' or maybe the debut next

I'll do a 'Top 100 Songs' list of this lot at some point
|

I like depressing when I'm in the mood.

It's got four or five funny songs in the mix (Gutter, Sailor, He's So Bad, Blood Alley) but stuff like Boredom and Teardrops is so much more bleak than you'd expect from what look like a 'joke band'.
|
| |
What's a good song by them to try?
Also on a scale of velveeta to gruyere how cheesy are they?
|
| |
Album Rating: 4.5
Maybe try 'Blood Alley' from Either Or to get a dose of their Tom Waits style, then 'Let's Drink' off this for some grim pathos.
They are kinda doing it for laughs, kinda serious too, so keep that in mind.
There's some cheese there but it's very knowing/intentional.
