Ah, but this I do like. I think it creates more interesting dynamics. This album could've totally been a top notch shred fest, but the more subtle moments laced between help make those moments shine brighter.

Have to agree with Dungeon on this one. How about the acoustic sections with the spanish guitar Ebola? Personally, they are some of my favorite moments of the album.
Concerning the ambient tracks, it really helps the fact that I perceive the album as cinematic. So the two tracks work like transitions from one scene to another. But again, this might be just me because on Nightfall in Middle-Earth for example, I love the interludes haha!

thought this said "winterfell" at first and was ready to check it out lol. pretty much the only way i'd listen to this style of metal nowadays is if it was asoiaf-themed

Seems it grew on me. Coming back, I'm digging the vocals more. Wish the production was more dynamic but I guess that's 2017 for you

Maybe the fact that it's a self-produced album plays a role in that. Not that it's badly produced but while I was reviewing this one I listened to Dream Theater's Awake and the difference in the sound was just overwhelming. I'm not trying to compare the two because they cannot be compared but still the difference is huge.

I just wish I could hear all the stuff going on more clearly. You can at least tell that it's happening though, so that's a start.
Great album. The bar is set respectably high, I'm curious to see if they can top this. Even just a bit more character (don't like how I'm using this word) into the vocals could do a lot for the band.
My favorite track is probably Portrait. About 4:45 into Nobody Sleeps Here is also a convincing declaration of intents by each member

An article says the second album is written, they're entering the studio soon to record it. They've also published a video for Portrait

Nice! this album was great, and I have even higher hopes for their next release. Some of the most tasteful shredding I've heard in a long time, and just an overall fun album

Copy-pasted from the band's site:
US epic metal shooting stars WITHERFALL will enter the studio to record their eagerly awaited second album, entitled “A Prelude To Sorrow”, the successor of their highly acclaimed debut album “Nocturnes And Requiems”.
The band comments:
"Witherfall have finished writing and are deep into pre-production of our second LP. On May 15th Witherfall will head into the studio to self-produce our follow up to “Nocturnes And Requiems”. Tracking and engineering wizardry will be handled by JJ Crews at Boogie Tracks studios in Panama City. The Compositions are both melodically violent and beautifully aggressive with a much Darker Tone than Nocturnes. More news to follow..."
Krisitan Wåhlin, who has painted the hauntingly beautiful cover artwork of “Nocturnes And Requiems” and who is known for his work for bands as King Diamond, Tiamat, Dissection, Black Dahlia Murder, and many others, is already working on the cover for “A Prelude To Sorrow”.
Witherfall’s second album is planned for a worldwide release on Century Media Records in early November 2018.

Here's an article with some info about it. I'd make a news article but I'm super sleepy and I don't feel I can do it any justice without copy-pasting everything written here.
