My first was probably Operation Mindcrime. And that is still my second favorite concept album out there (just behind Still Life).
The lyrics on this are indeed phenomenal. Mikael's easily among the best lyricists in prog or metal imo

no love for floyd huh?

Well, The Wall is definitely far from being the best concept album, if that's what you mean

Album Rating: 5.0
yeah but dsotm, wywh, and animals are

Album Rating: 4.5
Hm, I wouldn't count those in this context, since it is a discussion about albums telling "one big story" and neither of them do. The concepts are only very loose
Regarding concept stories, Still Life, Operation: Mindcrime and Epica by Kamelot are certainly up there. Maybe I'll do a list of my favorite concept stories one day

Animals is absolutely a full on concept album.
|
| |
About that topic, that's the biggest problem I have with wish you were here, the whole point of the album lyrically is really boring, I enjoy the more political approach of animals and the final cut.

All the album revolves around the "I miss you" idea minus have a cigar and welcome to the machine.

Yeah, if we're counting WYWH as a concept album, that's my favorite concept album.

Album Rating: 5.0
Yep. I don't think WYWH is, though.

guess it depends on how one defines a concept record
|
| |
Is this thread still relevant because of the album being underrated or it's just my ignorance about the band?

"Umm the concept part"
then yeah wywh is absolutely a concept record

There's a connection between the lyrics of the t/t and Shine On You Crazy Diamond but otherwise it's not a concept album. Welcome to the Machine and Have a Cigar have nothing to do with those songs lyrically.

You've got to hand it to Aiwaz, some of his arguments are irrefutable due to the sheer quality of evidence he brings forward.

"Welcome to the Machine and Have a Cigar have nothing to do with those songs lyrically."
i definitely see a connection to the overarching theme of the album

lateralus is definitely a concept album, especially when you listen to the album in the holy gift sequence or whatever
|
| |
Album Rating: 5.0
I don't listen to it in that sequence on the reg because the only way I listen to this anymore in on vinyl and I'm not going to that much trouble

besides it sounds ok

Lateralus is definitely a concept album imo, but not one that tells a story. So, there's a distinction to be made between thematic concept albums and story-telling concept albums, and Animals for examples doesn't seem to tell a coherent story in the sense of characters interacting with one another (which was my point one or two pages earlier), but it obviously is a thematic concept album
That doesn't mean you can't read a coherent story into a non-story concept album (Lateralus is very appropiate for that for example)
