Not only is On Another Ocean one of their best songs but it's one of the best songs I've ever heard, period. I don't know where Robin gets these melodies from, but they are fucking divine.

this album is a constant tease... after every track ended i was like 'uhh, ok?... maybe the NEXT track will be good?'
but no, it's bad... And boring, oh so boring. Biggest disappointment of '17.

yep, it's just a collection of humdrum folk strumming with 'progressive' song structures. lacking in hooks and memorable melodies unlike the last record

Easily the best crafted Fleet Foxes album yet (particularly from a production standpoint, I could listen to these sweeping textures of vocals, guitars, and strings all day), and very possibly their strongest effort to date. It's the songwriting that really is the difference-maker here; while by and large more ambitious, I'm not completely sold that it's really any stronger than that on Helplessness Blues. Certainly HB is a more diverse record if nothing else, which in turn makes it more immediate. Crack-Up doesn't have that immediacy, which unfortunately works against it.
Overall though I think time will be good to this album, even if the immediate reaction might not be overwhelmingly positive. Fast-forward 10-20 years and we'll be talking about this in at least the same manner as Helplessness Blues, if not with even more praise. 4.5'd for now, might bump it up to a 5 in future

BIG reverb on those vocals as per usual with these guys, too much for my taste.

Right now, this has the instrumental/structural risk advantage while HB is warmer, more melody oriented, and has time/memories on its side. I feel when all is said and done I'll view them as separate but equal masterpieces.

wow this album has been on my stereo since the day it leaked and it was like this:
1st listen: I might have been hyping this too much, but it's cohesive
2nd listen: hang on a minute, this is getting interesting
3rd listen: omg this is good
4th listen: fuck this is awesome
I lost count now but I've been listening to this a lot, it's aoty already
