There are definitely some soul music influences in some of his songs, maybe a bit more in his pre-Southeastern work than in recent albums but I getcha.
Isbell, in my eyes, is definitely one of if not the very best songwriter currently working. Definitely not a stretch to put him near Dylan.
I think I recommended you a Drive-By Truckers album as well but don’t overlook them (once you’re done obsessing over Isbell’s stuff of course), he got his start in that band, although he only wrote about 10 songs for them over the course of 3 albums some of them are among his best and the other two songwriters in that band are also amazing. Their stuff is more southern/country rock than Isbell’s Americana though.

Rules. Springsteen is all over this. Love it. Not quite as good as Southeastern, but getting pretty close.

It’s about time for a new Isbell record methinks.
Be sure to check his pre-Southeastern albums. I prefer Sirens of the Ditch and self-titled to this.

In my sleep I build machines,
But nobody ever wants to hear about my dreams,
Last night I saw a burning ferris wheel,
The meaning's anybody's guess
