I don’t think he’s trying to write music that’s purely beautiful, or only funny, or just emotional, or wistful, or sarcastic...he’s rambling and the instrumentation and tones rambles with him.

It’s more like being in someone’s head ‘aw man one day I’m gonna die...I remember my best friend dying...wow this bread is so good..look at the tits on that...my dead buddy would have appreciated...that’s a funny colour to paint a wall’ etc

It’s fun being inside the man’s head and his music makes it all resonate. A lot of the new songs have an underlying theme unifying disparate lyrical focuses, there’s a logic at times...other times it’s just pure chaotic release and that’s great too

I mean just listen to ‘Gustavo’ and the way the music interacts with the words for an example of his new style Killing it

Doof gets it.

Gyro seems to be looking for something entirely different in the music.

Like he's looking for his car keys in the fridge.

Well, all I would say is if you’ve an intense dislike for Kozelek (his beliefs and persona) then you’ll have a genuine reason to not enjoy this stuff where some of his earlier material it would have been easier to ignore

Personally I think he’s a funny guy with a dry worldview who’s reached this strange point where he’s immune to almost all self consciousness as an artist. He can be a bit of an ass but he’s got that awareness and isn’t so self serious

I love it that he said Admiral Fell was really excellent but also fucking boring, because it was and everyone was thinking it - so he did something about it. Brutal honesty and a fearless appetite to test his limits.

What more can you ask?

Honestly I love Mark and his whole personality. He's a no-bullshit dude who just wants to do what he does and he doesn't give a damn about answering to anyone or what they think of him. Like all people should.

Admiral Fell Promises is my fave Sun Kil Moon, though I am known to favour boring music.

I like what Doof said in some other thread about how liberated Kozelek sounds on these late-career albums. Making music for pleasure rather than to meet anyone's expectations. It's a beautiful thing to witness.

Absolutely. I remember reading somewhere recently where he heard another person's lyrics and realised he didn't have to write poetically or with metaphor or via any "rules", and realised he could write what he felt like writing. And the feeling of wanting to go into a recording with nothing prepared. I love that attitude.

Yeah man, with that ideology, everyone is an artist. Talk about what sandwich you ate today and strum a guitar. Instant classic. Not caring about quality of lyrics is the new standard

I've never known any musician to create music that's so beautiful, laugh-out-loud hilarious, and deeply thoughtful all at the same time. Mark has never fallen short of creating beautiful guitar music, and his lyrics are anything ranging from interesting, funny, sad, contemplative, morally flawed, and progressive, all in these wide spans of dense, superbly listenable albums that I will never tire of. I've never found music as fascinating and mysterious as I have when listening to Mark from Among the Leaves-onwards. And I love that.

The quality of lyrics on these albums are some of the best I've ever heard in music. They are the most utterly human lyrics full of so much genuine character that I feel actually SPOILED each time I get to hear a new Kozelek album.

They're meandering nonsense most of the time lol. He's literally just making shit up as he goes. And he ruins some great musical moments with shit lyrics - literally, in one of these songs he keeps repeating 'diarrhea' during a beautiful moment. I think it's meant to elicit a humorous response but it's mostly just distracting and, well, shitty

he's cataloging life and in his hands what would be mundane and banal is transformed into a kind of splendid mesmeric magic imo. idk it makes me feel better about going thru the motions required of me and that's something

One thing I will say for this guy having not heard any of his work is he has consistently gorgeous album art.

The ‘diarrhoea’ bit reminds me of the ‘crab cakes’ refrain on ‘Ben’s My Friend’ on ‘Benji’ - yeah, funny

Their first collab was okay but the second was horrendous
