"This is a Sun Kil Moon record" so its really a 2

See that confuses me lucid bc from what everyone is saying it seems similar to this

I never bothered with the Jesu collabs because I really don't like Jesu

It started on Among the Leaves and grew from there. Up until then he played rock-tinged pretty folk songs with a smooth croon and metaphorical lyrics that still ended up being primarily about boxing and guitars.

"Yeah man, with that ideology, everyone is an artist. Talk about what sandwich you ate today and strum a guitar. Instant classic. Not caring about quality of lyrics is the new standard "
You're missing the point. He's able to get away with what he does now because he's achieved everything there is to achieve via the normal route with RHP and early SKM. And 99% of artists wouldn't be able to pull off what he's doing now. Of course he cares about quality lol, I feel like your argument is basically that stream of consciousness is objectively terrible

Yeah moaning that Mark should write more standard melodic material - the dude has prob written and released 200+ songs that meet that criteria, he’s left enough of that for anyone

"I've written enough quality songs, let's start talking out my ass for several albums now"
I don't see how an artist's successful career writing good songs validates them writing bad ones. I really enjoy the music here but Kozelek just sounds like a pretentious douche most of the time. Look at tbe one I quoted lol. That is awful.

I'm gonna hit the lc and spin this one big time tonight. Huge lol at that runtime
|

Dude this is the best fuckin drunk music ever
|

Okay Gyro but youre failing to understand thay we don't think it's awful.

Listening to this after Ghosts, this sounds like a parody lol. This dude talks about eating sandwiches and going for walks and pondering what to buy at the grocery store now and you're all like "man I love how honest his lyrics are" and it's hilarious

I don't think he's trying to write another 'Ghosts' is my take :3

He doesn't need to, but it'd be refreshing if he could at least write competently. Any jackass can write lyrics like this.
|

But not many people could pull it off like him.

I will concede he has a unique way of doing it, but it's so nonsensical and meandering and useless to me. There are some funny lines on here, but I'm not a fan of him doing this for an entire album - especially because he used to be such a damn good lyricist and now he's not even trying and getting a free pass
|
| |
It's not a "free pass" like we're all letting him do what he wants even though we don't care for it. He's an independent musician just making whatever the hell he wants and it's SO DAMN GOOD that we pay for it and support him.
If you hate it so much then just stop listening to all his new albums until you finally read about one that's different. You clearly hate the style so why continue listening to each new album?

Well he did a half and half album in 'Among the Leaves' and really, other than the t/t and a couple of others it was the 'new style' songs that were the more memorable in the long run.
'Benji' is one of the albums of the decade so for that alone it was worth the career transition. At least for me.

My 2.5 isn't indicative of my actual feelings atm. This one is so hard to pin down because I love the music here, and at times, his rambling works in a hypnotizing way. But every time I hone in on the lyrics I'm like "fucking seriously Mark?" It's at least commendable how one dude can say so much useless shit without losing steam lol. I think some of these songs would rank among his best if he took them a little more seriously
