The fact that he's not self-serious is 90% of the appeal

I honestly don't hate this, I'm just frustrated with it. I've been spinning it a lot. I laugh, I cringe, I drift off. It's hard to know what to rate something like this

Yeah but never being serious turns into a tired shtick after a while. He's capable of some very poignant writing when he wants to and pretty sure we can all agree it's amazing. I enjoy some of the humorous bits here - like when he says "it's onnnnnnnnn me" in the opener and sustains that note for like 40 seconds. Paints a funny picture in my mind and I love it. But elsewhere his lyrics are so contrasting and grating

'He's capable of some very poignant writing'

Hmmm, Gustavo, Micheline, Jim Wise, Birds of Flims...etc etc

I actually think his new stuff might be more frequently poignant than the older stuff for me :/

For example, 2/3 of 'Ghosts' lands at pretty rather than particularly poignant for me

Agreed with Doof again.

I never felt anything particularly poignant or special in his previous style's lyrics. I mean they were all nice lyrics but they didn't make me stop and think or pay attention. His new style is far more engaging and poignant lyrically. He balances a lot of stuff. Be it the banality of his life or deep thoughts or bad jokes. It's comforting to listen to him go through the motions. It feels relatable and real.

Agreed with Doof again [2]
While this album has his most gorgeous music in a while, the storytelling isn't as engaging as his other recent material. I tend to tune out the specifics and just stay mesmerized by the sound. Can easily listen to this for 2 hours straight, which I can't say for many artists.

Love this album as I have his last several, with Benji and Common as Light being my favorites.
