Great review, nice to see that you're able to distinguish between quality and timing in regards to public opinion and critique.

Good review, wish this was streaming on something other than Spotify so I can give it a spin. Daggers of Black Haze is great.

They're one of my least favorite Gothenburg bands, but still excited to give it a spin.

the first couple of songs are pretty samey but once Daggers of Black Haze kicks in that's when the album really gets good.

I think my issue with this is Lindberg as a vocalist, and age has done him 0 favors. Sounds like chalkboard scratching.

How are you guys listening to this? Is it streaming anywhere, I thought it was on Spotify but just noticed there was only one song.

Pretty much this.
--...South of Heaven, upon release, wasn't received well by everyone...Sure, South of Heaven had a relatively positive reception later on, where as At War With Reality just has a cult following for the most part, but this comparison doesn't make much sense.--
I get that. That's why I said I'm not trying to directly compare the two albums, because there are definitely some differences... but again, is this mostly due to legacy and timing? Would At War... have been much better received back in the 90s? Also, South of Heaven might not have been instantly accepted, but it was accepted pretty soon after the initial shock. As you said, though, At War... just has its hardcore following. Basically, I think the comparison makes sense. I'm not comparing cultural or genre relevances... I'm questioning reception based on timing.

Enjoyable reading, the first paragraph is particularly interesting. I hope the album reaches spotify quickly.

I dig AWWR a lot, preferably the bonus track version because the extra tracks in the middle do a lot for the album’s pacing. This is a different beast though, much more melancholic and brooding.

the first two singles are way worse than everything else. it's like in vain all over again
palace of lepers, the chasm, the colours of the beast and basically all of the middle/end of the album is vastly stronger
production is still whack. shoulda just got a better drum tone rather than having so much junk in the low mids

Yeah, context definitely has a lot to do with public opinion. Like when an artist dies and then suddenly all their albums are on the charts and everyone acts like they were this huge iconic act despite the fact that no one had been paying attention for years.

Thanks. When you've done as many reviews as I have, it's hard to still open them in a fresh or unique way.

It's that melancholy and brooding that really sucks me into this one. Plus everything seems more fleshed out and focused.
--Production sucks yeah--
It's not great, but I don't mind it.

Just jammed a couple of tracks and was not impressed, will check the rest some time later this week.
Good read Willie. Thanks.

For me the production on this is one of times where you know it's not great, but at the same time it kinda works anyways. It almost makes it sound like this came out back in their hayday in the 90s so it doesn't really bother me.

eh it sounds muddy but i do prefer it to the last album a bit. would rather it sounded a bit more deliberately girthy but it's still better than a lot of stuff

I like how most of the tracks here subvert your expectations in some way, like even though they generally start in typical At the Gates fashion they usually hit you with something expected by the end. That Voivod-esque riff in the second half of Palace of Lepers comes to mind, and Daggers of the Black Haze

The production is really bad but this is quite a bit more musically engaging than AWWR.

Glad to see people coming around to it now that it's actually released. Personally, it's my favorite AtG album.
