I am afraid of listening to this and actually liking it. I didn't think the singles were that bad.

Well, there is a fundamental error with the album in terms of relevancy, context, and just about everything else. If you read my review anytime soon, you'll see the underlying "message" is about finding yourself, which is where the significance of the title comes into play. You're looking for yourself in a black labyrinth. The problem is when the album forgets all of that, talks about the Iraq War, and then revisits the theme at the end. 'What It Is' is the resolving point of everyone accepting themselves for who they are, but all Davis does is raise plot points that never pay off. We have a person who's having a religious crisis, identity crisis, moral crisis, and transitioning between genders. All of those points are condensed to nothingness, never developed, and serve no purpose.
