Pale Horses has been my favorite mwY these days, so to hear that this album is in that similar vein while still sounding distinct and forward thinking makes my head spin... haven't anticipated an album like this since... ever, maybe. Currently wearing the Wendy & Betsy shirt from their online store as I type this lol so looking forward to this album, and so glad it seems to be living up to the hype.

I'm curious... for you three who have the album, based on first impressions alone, where does this sit in their discog? has PH or B,S been usurped?

"It’s unfiltered passion that evades qualification; something to which we’d be performing a disservice by assigning a title." You fucking swiped the best possible ending to a review of this album available. Can't wait for this album to drop.

It was actually a very difficult album to review. Any mwY record takes time to grasp, but then on top of that this feels almost deliberately disorienting and evasive. Every time I listen to this I feel lost in the best way possible.

Ah, Sowing, your awesome review has just bumped my already off the gauge hype even further. Pale Horses is pretty much tied to B,S for me so to hear these comparisons makes my mind explode. And that comment about "Rainbow Signs"....I can't take much more of this.

Rainbow Signs is still my #1 mwY song because of the lyrics, but there's one song (spoiler: it's 'Michael Row Your Boat Ashore') that is just so jarring and unnerving that it rivals that moment musically. Julia is obviously right up there too. The rest I'd say is very much a matter of preference.

The one thing I'll say to help anti-hype this is that the album definitely did not click with me immediately. The songs are even less immediate than the ones on Pale Horses and even though they end up being more rewarding - at least by my humble take - they certainly all took several days of listening to register. Some are still revealing themselves to me. For instance, I only just now began to appreciate the genius that is Tortoises (high five Freddie!)

Pale Horses took me a long time to fully appreciate it but like I said it rivals B,S now. If the same can be said for this that makes me really happy. I'll try not to expect the AOTY (the new Metric is looking at that spot) but I think we're past the point of no return.

Tortoises is breathtaking, RIP Charles
This is their best album imo, it's grander, more demanding, and muuuch more overtly emotional than anything previous

I'm so stoked to hear this now.

It may be the greatest album of 2018 and if it is then it's def going to be the number 1 spot on my AOTY list.

Yeah, sorry Robotmagician, this band is very dear to me, and I want to see them make lots of money.

I’ve been very excited though for everyone to experience “Michael, Row Your Boat”. It’s such an entirely uncompromising song and I could hardly even comprehend it the first few times I heard it - I just felt like I had been hit in the gut with a sledgehammer. And perhaps reading this, one might think I just mean it’s very very heavy, and it is, but not in any way you’d be able to predict. Freddie has been calling this record a statement record and that song is what makes this record the statement it is.

Yeah I'm kinda trying to avoid talking too much about Michael because I'll just start fanboying hard lol

Also I think the impact is greater when you're not listening to it just waiting to get to Michael. It was such an unpredictable and amazingly shocking experience when I heard it whilst going in oblivious.

Completely agree, Sowing. I hope I’m not doing a disservice by hyping that track alone. Let me just take a moment to assure everyone just about every song on this album is stunning and there are likely going to be 2-3 moments that take your breath away before “Micheal...” completely fucks you up.

9:27, Julia, dormouse, Flee, Tortoises, and New Wine New Skins are also all 6/5 as well as Michael. The rest are just 5/5 sadly
