I could barely get through TCBTS the two or three times I listened to it so it's no surprise that Love Protocol and The Pavilion are garbage to me.
I really don't like the main riff/chord progression in Toys either. It sounds like cheesy pop punk but I love the "your favorite boy" section during the bridge.
The Dark Sentencer, Black Sunday, Queen of the Dark, True Ugly, and All on Fire are the winners for me on this album but still don't quite reach the levels of their previous work. This handful of songs keeps getting better the more I listen to them and give me vibes of Year of the Black Rainbow mixed with Ascension.
Claudio does sound fantastic though and I think it may have the best transitions between songs that any of their records have.
I think the biggest thing for me is that Coheed really misses Mic when it comes to the dynamic of what made them so great and unique. Zack is an awesome dude and a great bass player but Ascension is the only thing they've put out with him in the band that I've loved.
Descension (outside of Number City and Iron Fist) and TCBTS are garbo to me but this album is at least good. I'm hoping it continues to grow on me more but right now I'd give it a 3/5.

I don't even know where to start if the only songs you liked on Descension are Number City and Iron Fist. Sentry? Gravity's Union? 2's My Favorite 1?

To be honest I kind of agree with this.

Yeah I'm with LightAndGlass on a lot of what he said. I want to love this but I can't. I don't hate it as much as I did their last decade of material, but it's frustrating how "okay" it is without ever elevating itself. The singles might be the best on the album. It's quite forgettable and samey throughout. Lacks dynamism. Maybe it'll grow on me, but after 5 spins I'm not sure if it has a chance. Still a step-up from TCBTS.
Disappointing, but disappointing Coheed is still a 3.

Sentry is decent but nothing makes me want to listen to it. The end of Gravity's Union is sweet but same deal, nothing else about the song stands out to me.
The Hard Sell, Away We Go, and 2's My Favorite 1 are absolutely my most hated Coheed songs. The Hard Sell is some butt rock with the worst lyrics Claudio's ever written and the first line of 2's My Favorite 1 makes me cringe super hard.
It's almost unbelievable to me how big of a difference in quality there is between Ascension and Descension. It's not like I want to dislike anything from this band but prior to Zack joining the band, my lowest rating for a Coheed album would be a 3/5 for YotBR. Descension is a 2.5/5 and TCBTS is a 2/5 for me. Ascension is probably a 5/5.

Hey man, it's not like I want to dislike Coheed albums/songs. I've loved them since I was 10 and heard A Favor House Atlantic on FUSE back in 2003. I just caught them on their last tour and it was the best they've ever sounded live. I still love this band but I can't lie to myself and listen to songs I don't like.

FWIW the artwork is Nia and Nostrand (the titular "Unheavenly Creatures" and future parents of Vaxis) in the Dark Sentencer (a giant space prison) as it collapses around them. In case anyone didn't get that yet.

Descension and TCBTS are garbo agreed.
This album does have me thinking Rainbow is a bit under-appreciated. About as far as Coheed have successfully strayed from their "core" sound.

I feel that every time I go back and listen to it. The hook in When Skeletons Live where Claudio says "I'm sorry but the hurt's not going away" during the bridge is so goddamn good.
