I've been less than thrilled with their past few albums, the opener already has me hooked.

yeah this is really homogenous but each track alone is a blast. The Pavilion is probably my favorite so far, but Queen of the Dark and The Dark Sentencer are all up there.

I think 4 is fair. There are a couple songs I might actually remove from my phone. Lots of great songs here. Wasn't into Toys that much but The Dark Sentencer is probably my new favorite Coheed song. Queen of the Dark and It Walks Among Us are top tier for me as well. True Ugly and Black Sunday don't really do anything for me and they could've replaced the songs that sound like they're from the last album with some more prog influenced ones but overall a solid album.

The Pavilion is kinda the odd one out as it wasn't written for the story, and had to be re-fitted to have a place on the album. It's much more TCBtS than the rest of the album.

I wish the chorus of True Ugly was better because the rest of the song deserves it. It's such a disappointing payoff for those verses and the bridge.

"I think "Toys" might for real be the perfect Coheed and Cambria song."

Yes.

Anyone know what the story is throughout the album?

if you mean how the song correlate to the events, here's my take on certain bits/what ive learned:

i recall in an interview claudio saying that "queen of the dark" is a pivotal bit in the story involving sister spider "becoming the queen of the dark" (think back to "the gutter" visuals i suppose), "pavilion" feels like an interlude between the first and second act, a flashback sequence of sorts to give more depth to the two protagonists, and the second act is where shit really hits the fan, even if i have no idea what "night-time walkers" implies. iirc claudio did say in yet another interview that "lucky stars" is when sister/creature make their escape from the dark sentencer, but i think of it more of an after the credits/epilogue thing.

"old flames" is the song most reminiscent of the album's cover and "it walks among us" is probably the big boss fight considering the taunting @ creature in the lyrics.

but there's a big illustrated book that's supposed to come with deluxe editions for the album that'll outline the story and hopefully? it'll end up online in the next month or so.

I've always really liked YOTBR and a lot of this reminds me of that album but done with better results. The only song that hasn't 100% clicked is Lucky Stars. Woulda been cool with Old Flames closing this one out.

This is the longest coheed album yet it feels so short to it's actual length. Crazy. Black sunday an queen of the dark are in my top coheed songs now.

Sounded like perfected YOTBR songs. An that album actually pretty decent with a mix of good apollo 2.

I still have yet to give their whole catalog a proper listen. Only albums I've heard in full are the first 3 and Ascension. I don't come back to the whole albums but I love a lot from all of them except Second Stage which I didn't really like at all. Add Atlas, Sentry The Defiant, and Gravity's Union (I love all 3), and then that's my experience with Coheed.

Anyway, album is definitely a smidge too long but I had so much fun with all of these songs. The Dark Sentencer through True Ugly was an incredible run minus the title track (aka the only meh song here). What followed was still great too. This album but a big ol smile on my face and that's one of the best things an album can do. Like, how can't you be smiling during the end of Old Flames? But yeah, time to listen to Coheed more. I liked this more as a whole than any of the others I've listened to, but I haven't heard them in a while and clearly, that's not the case with all of you real fans so we'll see what happens.

Pro: Claudio has never sounded better and the dark sentencer is great.

Neg: Too long, too artificial, drowned out guitars, not very memorable and not very varied. If they had just mixed it up a bit more it would have been a great improvement to the release

Album is better than expected but still missing something that they seem to have lost when writing nwft. Probably a 3.5 or 4. I'll see how it faces after a few more spins. Saw them live last night and was pretty good but still no love for the title track after seeing it live

Holy christ this album is long. Too long and not enough variety for my liking.

Also, I have some serious fucking issue with this statement:

"this is a shockingly consistent 79 minutes (lol) of music: you won't find a "Once Upon a Dead Body" here "

Once Upon *Your Dead Body is one of the best songs on Good Apollo Vol. I and better than almost every song on this album.

Once Upon Your Dead Body is pretty good but FAR from one of the best on GA.

"Uh..."

1. The Willing Well Suite

2. Welcome Home

3. The Lying Lies & Dirty Secrets of Miss Erica Court

4. Once Upon Your Dead Body

5. Mother May I

6. Always & Never

7. Ten Speed

8. Wake Up

9. Crossing the Frame

10. The Suffering

11. Keeping the Blade (I guess)

That makes Once Upon Your Dead Body one of the best songs on that album and the chorus, "I hope you die right now, will you drink my chemical?" is better than just about every chorus on Vaxis I. Not to mention the perfect "once upon your, once upon your, once upon your dead body!" section.
