"I'm actually scared to listen to this...you know you're royally fucked when you're scared to listen to your favorite band."
It's a solid album, I gave it a 4.5 because I got pissed with all the undeserved 1's this is getting, and because I'm biased. I'd give it a solid 4 atm, maybe a 3.5 on a bad day.

Excellent review, I like how you’ve offered a nice summation of their downfall without descending into the ‘rant’ territory like so many other reviewers would.
This is practically unlistenable for me outside of morbid curiosity (but I’m pleased not everyone feels the same). The issue being that the quirkier moments you’ve highlighted simply don’t work (in my eyes) & so I’m left with a clumsy set of tracks next to some completely bland poppy numbers. Then again this is coming from the guy who disliked Starlight, so this was always going to be a step too far.

Thanks all, the praise and constructive criticisms both mean a lot! You'd be surprised how little of that you get once you've turned the corner to staff.
@Xeno - you're absolutely right, I was SO hyped for The Resistance because I thought Black Holes was one of their best albums. Man, what a letdown that was. I remember also driving out on my lunch break at work to buy The 2nd Law, and that was the last time I legitimately gave a shit about them. Drones had some really sick guitar work at times though, which was enough to stoke my interest enough to see what direction they were going to take this neon thingy.

Oh man, my hype for The Resistance was through the roof, cannot remember being so hyped for a new release, ever. What a letdown indeed.

Demon I'm surprised you don't like propaganda or break it to me. Those two songs were the saving grace here for me. It's them finally doing something truly different, for the first time in what feels like ages. Break it to me is like 'madness' but well done.

I kinda wish they would have made a whole album like that. Feels like traveling through a wormhole which I think is the kind of sensation they wanted to convey with a name like simulation theory and all the 80s sci-fi worship.

tbh even earlier Muse isn’t what it once was for me personally, I really struggle to see the positives in their new direction.

yeah I'm not in awe over OoS and Absolution the way I used to be either, which makes their new material even harder to get into -- but credit where credit's due, this exceeded my very low expectations

Not quite sure what to think of this just yet. I haven't gleamed any real standouts from this after a couple listens, whereas every previous Muse album boasted at least one home run of a track (even The Resistance, whose t/t is one of my top 15 favorite Muse songs). No real low points either, though. Going with a 2.5 for now, could go up or down.

Hey I haven't listen to Muse since Origin of Symmetry. This album any good? Looks baller

This popped up on Spotify so I listened to it on the way home. It sounded great going into The Dark Side, I thought there was potential and was excited.. but then the chorus, along with the rest of the album happened.
