so, like, what do you guys think?
do you think music journalism communities are the ideal way to spread the word about, well, any music? do you think bold highly-opinionated reviews should be met with hesitance? or do you think prolific reviewers, such as future-nolerthebowler, should be burned at the stake?

I think it all depends on context. Using more personal language is fine by me as long as you're bringing your point home. But I'd still have a little more detail to justify it, even in a really personal write-up. So I guess what I'm saying is: it's a matter of both context and how you balance analysis and subjectivity.
But if we're talking a landmark review, like if it's your 50th, 100th, etc. and you wanna celebrate - or if you're 5'ing the album for personal reasons like you did here - I'd say go all-out and make it more personal. No shame in that... hell, I did that with my Ghost review :]

I have some releases coming up that I’ll write more conventional reviews about the music and such, just kinda getting back into the writers mindset with this one (:

Like you said, writing a decent music review is hard precisely because it’s hard, or impossible, to grasp with words the emotion of a song or album. But emotion is equally hard to express succinctly through music or painting or any other form of art. As such, the “problem” you described is hardly exclusive to music journalism, it’s at the core of any sort of creative or artistic process. If you want to produce a good review, you’ll need to have the tools of a good writer, essentially an artist.

@licked: I didn't think about it that way, but you are totally right. If you want people to pay attention, you have to make it appealing.
I just get tired of all the fluff. These days I honestly pay more attention to numbers, like rating averages and tbh sales. Numbers don't lie. They sometimes tell a partial story, but they don't lie.

“I just get tired of all the fluff. These days I honestly pay more attention to numbers, like rating averages and tbh sales. Numbers don't lie. They sometimes tell a partial story, but they don't lie.”
I hear you, but the easy fix is just choosing not to read reviews by certain people or reviews that surpass a certain length. These days I just browse for music with high ratings or music highly rated by people whose opinion I respect, which are the only ways I really see for filtering out the garbage. Sales mean nothing to me though and I’m only peripherally aware of them.
