The last 1:40 of Grand Paradise does sound like Modest Mouse. I’ll give it that. That and the title track are like all I’ve listened to since I listened to that full album. His falsetto is something I’ve always thought was a joke. It’s terrible. I don’t hear much Brand New nor Modest Mouse outside of that one section I mentioned. And it’s a shame you have to fast forward to the end of that song to get that sound.

no-one on this page has it right so here's the objectively correct, inarguably based Conorverse ranking:

NMG

Smidley

The more I listen to Foxing though, the more I def hear BN and MM in lots of aspects of their music. Just minor influences though, Foxing are clearly their own entity and have an unmistakable sound.

I thought they sounded like Muse the first time I heard Gameshark but the way he screams on that song is unreal and won me over super quick

I'm a huuuge fan of Conor's screams and would love it if they made their very own Daisy which is half the reason I name checked that album in the review

If we're counting Smidley then that's up there too, I didn't realize that was allowed

Okay, hate is a strong word, but I'm indifferent to its presence on NMG and have no issue discarding it to improve the album's flow

I mention Smidley here because this album to me basically feels like another Smidley but with worse songwriting and overdubs from the other two Foxing members

It's been at least a few months since I found out about Smidley and subsequently spun it but that sounds accurate (other than the fact that I either like this more or it's just fresher)

This is a stellar pop-rock album, and an slightly underwhelming Foxing album

Daisy is just as good as TDAG imo. Very underrated. But I hear no Daisy anywhere in Foxing but another Daisy is very welcome in my book

idk there's a couple of shouty Foxing songs I could see at home at a "Daisy" style album

I don't think they'll ever go in that direction for an entire record though

@Brushed: I don't either besides certain moments (particularly the end of 737). I don't even care about it sounding like Daisy I just want Conor to scream and go off for a full album.

@Wildcard: I wish they would though. He's got such an incredible scream/shriek. I wouldn't want it to be a "screamo" record - I'd still want there to be some melody injected and interesting song progressions. Maybe like a midway point between 137 and If I Believed In Love. Like you said though it probably won't happen.

apparently in interviews they've been saying 737 is a hint to what their next album will sound like, so we may very well get exactly that album y'all want. it will certainly be better than this

This is about right. I'm pretty sure if you gave this record 8-10 listens, it would be just about perpetually infectious for the rest of your life. Lots of earworms here. I also think it might be Conor's most mature and dynamic vocal performance. But the album is slight, in more ways than one. A lot of what is truly successful here presents itself as relatively shallow. Having an ambitious opener and closer doesn't just negate the lack of ambition in the rest of the album. And granted, there's plenty of progressiveness in a lot of the tracks in between, but when the main focus is that the songs come off as pop songs on 24 cups of coffee - a lot of that just comes off as eccentricity and not artistry.

737 is a stunning accomplishment though, and I'd be just as bedazzled by Speak With The Dead if it wasn't released as one of this record's 13 singles .

Strong record in a lot of ways, objectively, but neglectful of what would have made it great.

@Sowing 737 is one of the only shining moments here tho. I love that track. But that doesn’t make a good album. The chorus drags a lot but I’ll forgive it for the ending but it reminds me more of Enter Shikari than Brand New or Modest Mouse if I’m being honest.
I think more The Great Unknown than any of those you mentioned. But The Great Unknown was actually better. More thrilling. The band has been lost since Dealer honestly, yet Enter Shikari actually gets better? Kinda weird. But it is what it is. I guess it’s more of the take. Foxing is so whiny and lonely. Enter Shikari actually takes the more scientific approach and Rou’s falsettos don’t wanna make me chop my head off.
I feel if anyone is closer to making a new Daisy, it’s probably them and not Foxing.
