Lotta contenders on this album

Vaxis I knocks this right off the table, absolute textbook Coheed from start to finish (even if it never goes beyond that brief)

Vaxis I is great, but yeah... definitely has some pacing issues. This on the other hand has better pacing, but also feels like it's missing "something" I can't put my finger on it...

New Coheed song "The Joke" and even more unusually "Deranged" (re-recording?) are set to release later today. I'm doubtful this is relating to a new album, might just be a one off single like what they did with Jessie's Girl 2.

I managed to listen to The Joke on BBC Radio 1 yesterday and first impressions... It's alright. Hits the Coheed clichés from the "Woah's" to the "toniiiight's". There's some nice bass riffs in the verses, and I don't mind the synths, but my overall takeaway is that it lacks energy and it's quite down-beat. Feels more of a B-Side to Vaxis 2 if anything.

That "Holding your umbrella under a falling sky" part kinda sucks too.

If you want to hear it (with the added bonus of crappy radio compression) skip to about 1:28:50 on here: https://www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/m001yn20

I heard the 30 second preview they posted last night and it does sound like a Vaxis II B-side, though I'd take it over a couple other songs on the album.

Edit: Just listened to it and I actually like the heavily distorted butt rock chugs in the verses and this is maybe the first time I've been outright impressed with Zach's bass playing but he fuckin' kills it. The chorus feels pretty by the numbers Vaxis-era but it's hard to complain. Solid 7/10 track that I don't know I'd ever go out of my way to listen to on its own.

^Yeah, completely agree about Zach! There's a proggy bit in the 2nd verse which made go "HOOOOLD ON" haha. So awesome.

Song is weird.

There are some really cool and fun ideas, but the chorus sucks and it feels like they needed to either up the energy or the drama a hair to really capitalize on what they were going for. Bass and drums are killer, and I think the dissonant guitar is a really fun touch.

I would hope this isn't part of Vaxis III because I don't think this makes a ton of sense as a lead (that chorus is just doing nothing for me), but if it's packaged as Deranged for the Joker movie that's kinda cool.

Overall, feeling fairly meh

vaxis ii is really up and down for me, songs like comatose and the closing 3 tracks are some of my favourite coheed since their early days (first 4 records), then there's a bunch of pretty average songs peppered throughout

Yeah tellah I agree with that take, though I absolutely love Ascension despite some bad lyrics. I think it's the best record they'd put out since Good Apollo I and it remains there.

IKS > SSTB ≥ GA:I > Ascension > NWFT > *YOTBR >>> Vaxis I & II >> Descension >>>>>> TCBTS

My feelings haven't changed much since release, but Vaxis II honestly surprised me with how much creative juice it had. Vaxis I is more consistent, but essentially didn't try anything new. Vaxis II is a bit of a glorious mess, and I think the "worst" songs are probably the ones that are most content to just kinda sit there and stand still. Definitely didn't expect a run like the final three songs though.

My ranking is probably

IKS>SSTB=GA:1>NWFT>Afterman>YOTB>Vaxis 1>Vaxis 2>>>>TCBTS

Enjoyed the new single, though there were a couple weird moments like those squealy guitars in the post-chorus. Solid 3.8 rn, I'd take it over some of the Vaxis II cuts like Blood. I'd surprisingly never heard Deranged, and holy fuck is it ever a song written for Batman Arkham City

Respun this album and I still love it. Definitely not the old Coheed from GA or NWFT, but it's a great album on its own, and the final suite is one of the best things they've made post-Afterman, and that's saying a lot when Dark Sentencer exists

Yeah Deranged is cool! Weird how it first released during the YOTBR era, but sounds more fitting on the Vaxis albums to be fair. It was like a glimpse into their future.

Dammit I knew I was forgetting an album. I have to slot in YOTBR right after NWFT.

Big agree on Deranged being a great song. It's been stuck in my head for a couple hours now since I just relistened to it. Man, that 2010 era of Coheed has such a distinct sound to it and funnily enough a lot of the songs I've liked the most from Vaxis are the ones that touch on that Black Rainbow sound.

Just re-listened to this album again for the first time in ages.

Give me a whole album full of whatever the title track is doing, because that would be f***ng epic.

One new song, one repackage. Deranged had been made for the Arkham City soundtrack
