Part of me wonders if I’m overrating the album because of that lmao

We’ll see how I feel in a couple months I guess

They did a new The Network album and Billie did a solo album of covers and a Pinhead Gunpowder EP

*edit* Oh I see, I thought you were asking if they wrote anything else in that time lol Yes! I think they actually wrote some good material in that time. I’m gonna ride the hype train bc this was my first favorite band when I was like 8 y/o and im so happy to hear new music from them I enjoy, because I haven’t since ‘09

yes i was being a wanker and asking if theyd learnt how to write more songs than the same ones theyve been reiterating in pop punk mediocrity

this isnt a fully formed opinion yet, but this is giving the same vibes as that lp that All Time Low shat out last year. definitely less generic tho, and with some actual bangers like Dilemma.

Trying to decide if this is their best since AI or just their best since 21CB, but either way, it's their best in a long time.

---To me, Green Day in and of themselves are almost a cringe proposition in and of themselves, so there's something kinda quaint to them throwing caution to the wind in the same exact way that Rivers does---

I honestly really kinda agree with this. I don't even expect GD albums to be technically or instrumentally proficient, it's basically just the catchier & noisier the better with them. And this sure is at least catchy.

Lone exception might be AI because it was a cultural zeitgeist and they were the lucky recipients of lightning in a bottle there.

i certainly dont expect technical or instrumental proficiency

but i think it would help them expand their songwriting. theyve been going so long youd think they might want to push themselves at some point

but perhaps once youve been going this long if it was going to happen it would have already

Totally agree Sowing.

I feel like American Idiot was the band being uniquely inspired, while also happening to have that inspiration come at the absolute perfect time to launch that album from being merely great to all-time legendary status. Like it or not, you simply can't have a conversation about music from the 00's without talking at length about American Idiot. No better album better encapsulates the pendulum swinging the other direction in the Bush era.

I think 21CB show that the band was still talented and in their bag, but the ambitious scope was already starting to wear thin and they were not the ones to shepherd the discontent of the Obama years like they were with the previous administration.

I think I'm landing on this being better than 21CB, but also more forgettable. We'll see

@Mort: I'd say AI was the point for them, at least in terms of shaking up their songwriting to the tune a punk-rock opera with 9 minute tracks.

It's still early for me to make a full assessment, but my initial impression is that this is a snooze and is probably just being propped up by the fact that it isn't complete shit. In comparison to the Blink-182 album last year, at least that release had some genuine emotion woven into the audience pandering. This is just a collection of mid tempo, vapid Madlibs anthems.

Yeah it's definitely their best since American Idiot but I still can't say I was too wow'd by it.

Look Ma No Brains is an absolute banger tho
