I think that was the one! Made an immediate believer out of me.

First time I heard it I was driving and listening to JJJ (local radio station in Oz) and it came on and I remember thinking, "What is that?!" But the CD at the station broke or something after a minute or two and I got where I was going and never heard it back announced.

And then a few days later I was watching Rage (music video show) and it came on and the video was perfect and I was a fan for life.

There aren't many songs I can recall exactly where I was and what I was doing when I first heard them but that is one.

Same sentiment here; one of those "hearing the beatles for the first time" moments where life sort of just paused. It sounds overdramatic but it's true lol. I remember specific details about the rest of that night and the whole week that OA came out.

Little dark age was such a good single. Really up there with their best. If a dumb meme ruins it for anyone then they are too much online and deserve to lose the ability to enjoy things tbh.

I like it too. It's probably borderline GH material for me.

On first listen this one really went in one ear, out the other. Some tracks that even stood out to me as “not good.” Highly unlikely this lives up to Little Dark Age

Im ngl I think all their shit sounds generic as fuck. Like yeah some of it is very catchy or has a cool synth part or whatever but they're pretty vanilla overall yknow

Different ears hear different things I guess. Although I don't always appreciate everything they do, MGMT sound like no other band as much as themselves to me; they have a distinctive melodic style (such as in the chorus to Mother Nature - "I understand your hesitation") that feels so familiar to what makes them MGMT and sets them apart from other bands. And then there's their inherent quirkiness and embrace of inventive structures and vocal styles (such as in Flash Delirium, When You Die or Alien Days).

I kind of consider them a bit of an anomaly actually. They do their own thing.

This is sooooo disappointing. I was crazy about the singles, so this is a bummer

I think my initial take on this was a little too harsh. It’s still not that great but it’s not as bad as my first listen had me thinking it was. The first half is decent. The latter half is kinda bad. I think after Nothing to Declare, I get bored. Dancing in Babylon is the worst thing here for sure though. But I gotta admit, I think people are sleeping on People in the Streets. The more I listen to that song, the more I’d put it in my list of favorite MGMT songs and shows this album could’ve been quite spectacular.

from the front of the train where the coal is burned

AAAAAAAHHHHHHH!!!!

we’ve come a long way since those halcyon summer days gargoyling over country club swimming pools, spending paychecks on itunes gift cards, and the radio playing time to pretend one friday night it was 2008 it was calm the water backlit lambent turquoise someone did a highdive canopener the smell of burgs dawgs gyros last call at the canteen, and i knew i was the outsider but that night that moment we all agreed, this song fucks. portals are whatcha make of em — no more no less

Man, I am kind of in awe of this record. On first blush, I absolutely love it. I think anyone who is turned off by it being "boring" is well within their right to feel that way, but MGMT have managed to strike this wavelength that is really profound for me in a sorta uncanny, disturbing way. It's like trying to explain a bad trip or something, but their music just has this pure, hypnotic, psychedelic quality to it that I find anything but boring. Maybe that's a bit over the top, but I genuinely find In the Afternoon and When You Die to be masterpieces but also some of that most unsettling and haunting songs I can recall.

I need more time with this one, but I am loving it

my favorite thing about this band is how they maintain that their actually good album is a joke and that all the other vapid empty aimless horseshit in their discography is their real art

LDA is still best but this is up there too. Reminds me of newer Gorillaz and a bit of The Avalanches. Mother Nature might be their best song, love that one.

I liked this more than I expected - the front half is filled with gorgeously sunny psych pop tracks. And the production and instrumentation is immaculate. It sounds FANTASTIC on high end equipment.

That said, it isn't as iconically catchy as Oracular nor is it as experimentally bold as Congratulations or their self titled.

It'd rate it about even with Little Dark Age, but this one is more fun to listen to.
