it’s been a hot minute since I’ve had such a visceral negative reaction to an album. After the first couple songs trying to appeal to “the fellow kids” I was like hell fuckin nah

@Odal: Thank you once more ;-) And yeah, I think most of the supposed ageism is pressure that pop artists and their teams place on themselves. Like you said, JT isn't the coolest guy in the room anymore, but nobody who's in their 40s and married with two kids should be. He needs to find that next stage of his career, as I alluded to in my concluding paragraph, and I can fully understand how it might be difficult to successfully fuse his strengths (sexually charged dance pop numbers) with being a family man. Honestly, Man of the Woods was a decent step in that direction, he just needs better execution.

@nol: I dislike it, but there are a small handful of tunes here that I'll return to, so it avoids the dreaded single star.

I usually use artistic direction to inform my ratings over how I feel about individual songs. And the direction of this album is trendy “cool kid” garbage that would’ve made him sound like an old fart if he released it 20 years ago

I rate off vibes and the vibes here are nonexistent

There are vibes here, they just aren't any fun. It's like showing up to a bad party that you can't leave because you're the DD.

In hindsight, 20/20 is like a 3/5 album. That aged worse than any of the "big" albums of the past like 10 or so years

Also, 20/20 is prob one of the top 5 pop albums of my lifetime.

In one day I listened to this album more than I ever did Man of the Woods. No, it’s nothing revolutionary and I’m happy about that because we don’t need 20/20 again. I want a fun ass album to not think hard about and this delivers. Yeah it’s bloated and 3-4 songs could have been cut, but I’m enjoying most of this. And I think Technicolor is the best track here. His voice is as good as ever, I dig the lyrics & like it’s basically two versions of the same song.

I'm glad you're enjoying it! I could see how the pieces would come together for some, but the melodies would have to stick, which for me largely hasn't happened at all. I've already created a 10 song version of this that I'm using to try to get me into it, maybe if that happens then the other 8 castoffs will start to click.

Review is pretty dead on for me, nice work sow.

I think there’s potential here, but the majority of this clutches so hard to be relevant and hip with the kids. The autotune stuff in particular is so egregious. But the biggest offender — it’s nearly 80 minutes long! Dude’s a fucking sadist.

Thanks DrGonzo! The length is definitely a problem. As someone earlier itt mentioned, 20/20 is just about the same runtime, but this feels half an hour longer lmao.

Not that I ever thought The 20/20 Experience albums are particularly good (hell, consult my reviews for my thoughts on both albums), but Man of the Woods made me like even the few songs on those albums I DID like even less. Like in recent times even, I'd hear a song and think "yeah that one still kinda slaps" and then another time I'd think"wait, was this one ALWAYS this bad?

This album is better than Man of the Woods... but that's honestly not a steep hill to climb. It's still really bad.

I tried to trim this down to something I'd enjoy and this is the solid 3.5 I came up with. The track order matters for flow. Might trim to 10 songs yet if it helps me enjoy it even more.

2. My Favorite Drug

3. Selfish

4. Imagination

5. Drown

6. What Lovers Do

7. Paradise

8. Flame

9. Love & War

@sowing

Well that says a lot about 20/20, because both of those albums do not feel anywhere near their run times.
