"20/20 tho"
I'm always on board with praising 20/20, but let's not forget FutureSex as well which only marginally concedes the top spot to 20/20

The summary got me also. 👏🏻

His Tiny Desk highlights how good of an entertainer he still is while also really underlining how much he has missed the mark with this reclamation project. A damn shame

I just played 20/20 again to make sure I wasn’t making false claims. Yeah idk, that album has aged about as well as the cheddar that’s been in my fridge for about 8 months now. The production is still excellent but even the tracks I used to love like Don’t Hold The Wall and Mirrors are just kind of alright now. Maybe Tunnel Vision is worth holding onto tho. But yeah, mediocre af album. Hindsight is 20/20 - that’s right, I just said that.

I went back and reread my review for 20/20 pt 2 and I may have been from the future writing that one lol I was a bit overly critical of pt 1 in that one though. I think pt 1 is a great album. It's a bit long in the tooth at times, but I think it largely works because it's attempting to do so much. It's a bit hard to categorize though because I wouldn't necessarily call it a timeless album nor would I say it's of its 2013 contemporaries. Justin was truly just doing his own thing and it worked really well on pt 1. I do maintain though, that both 20/20 entries really lack on the low end and the production can sound a bit flat as a result.

For me a lot of the songs just kind of fell flat. Not a lot to speak of in regards to memorable choruses. Songs like Suit & Tie, Bubblegum, Spaceship, Let The Groove In all sound distinct from one another but they mostly go nowhere. Or when something interesting does happen, it’s not enough to justify the length of the track. It’s cool that he tried so many different things but the payoff feels not worth the investment of time 11 years later after having heard some great pop albums. One of those situations where the ambition is a mile long but an inch deep. I take back what I said about Mirrors tho, it’s still a catchy and fun song. Latter half is just kind of there tho, but it’s one of the better transitions

| |
I’m a bit conflicted however, because if I give 20/20 a 2.5, this has to be a 0.5, because this shit is infinitely worse

"It’s cool that he tried so many different things but the payoff feels not worth the investment of time 11 years later after having heard some great pop albums"
There are no "great" pop albums in the 2010's better than 20/20, sorry to be the bearer of bad news

There are almost certainly better pop albums in the same month that 20/20 released. There are fs dozens better since it

20/20 is not quite a timeless masterpiece tbh not every song justifies (heh) the massive runtime
just a really fuckin good album
a version of it with the best 3 songs from pt 2 subbed in for pt 1s occasional dips would be a timeless masterpiece tho

I still want to hear the 3 timeless pop masterpieces that have come out since then

Man, I would take so many albums over 20/20 lol
Carly Rae Jepsen's Emotion, Side B, and Dedicated are all strong contenders. I'd probably take Sweetener and Thank U, Next. I'd probably take 1989 and Reputation. Pop 2 and Charli by Charli XCX. Melodrama by Lorde.
