3.5 great | tripleb2k | June 6th 08 | When I first heard the intro to Followed the Waves I thought my ears were gonna bleed. Upon further listening the album was surprisingly good.

4.5 superb | Lungingweasel | June 6th 08 | Melissa's first solo outing just comes shy of greatness. I thoroughly enjoyed all the tracks here, all maticulously layered to give them just the right effect.
However; throughout the album I was waiting for the "gut punch" single to just knock me over. And sadly, it doesnt occur here.
But with this in mind, I definitely recomend MAdM. I hope her second album ever sees the light of day...

4.0 excellent | burton.and.gas | February 7th 07 | I saw scpttrerulz's review and disagreed so i just had to sound off for the first time to offer an alternative view. Melissa Auf Der Maur has a very impressive alt-rock CV as bassist for Hole and Smashing Pumpkins. However i think there's a lot of substance to her solo outing which earns it at least an excellent rating. Ok a lot of people will be put off by the apparent sillyness of certain songs but the vocals and music both come with a haunting quality. The guitars are given a lot of potential, using certain styles associated with everything from Hard Rock and Metal to MBV style indie and lashings of her previous act the Pumpkins. A Kyuss influence rears its head in certain of these songs, something which i couldn't quite place my finger on until she mentioned it in a web zine, giving them a heavy undertone, which seems to have been counterbalanced by her own indie style sophistication. I heartily recommend it.

3.0 good | scpttrerulz | February 7th 07 | I've wanted to review this for a long time but always put it off thinking that rating a more or less obscure artist with something just above average wouldn't really generate interest. More or less because, let's face it, Melissa Auf Der Maur used to be famous, with bass gigs with both The Hole and The Smashing Pumpkins in her career kitty but this is very close to lame. There are some interesting songs here but the cliches outweigh the positives. Further, well, seems Ms. Auf Der Maur was some sort of sex symbol in the 90s. This record sounds like she's still trying to live those days, with premature lyrics (and ironically mediocre bass). The redeeming factor is the other instrumentation though resulting in some very good alt. rock moments. It's good for a few listens, as music somewhere in the background. Not for serious listening
