If there’s one band that has always ruled the dick it’s got to be
Sea Of Shit. Even in their humble beginnings, before becoming Sputnik go-to noisecore favorite, these junkies from Chicago displayed a sense riffmanship far exceeding their peers. I don’t usually approve of the ‘grind’ tag that often gets plastered on these guys, but this demo earns it because, well,
blast beatz. That’s not to say that their next records don’t have plenty of those, too, but their debut chooses to pummel and rage where its successors crush and oppress. The production had to be adjusted accordingly, so expect a noticeably thinner and hollower sound than on their s/t or split with Water Torture. The vocals are not as punishing, either, often hitting the funny high notez I mentioned in my previous review. I dig. The drummer’s additional growls sound like Ignimbrite vomiting over a metal record that’s actually good, so take it or leave it. Opening with ‘Vulgar Display of Deception’, Sea Of Shit start out slowly and hardcore-y before going all out with steady blast beating and some junky breakdown. ‘Worried Sick’ is a song that needs no introduction, and if it does then you’re probably andcas. ‘Answers’ is a classic Sea Of Shit closer, chock full of sludge and feedback, and as the song approaches its inevitable end it actually climaxes with a weird, atmospheric blend of restrained vocals and suffocating blast beats. If you want to hear Sea Of Shit at their most primal and unadulterated, this sweet demo I just made up is right up your alley.
