Review Summary: Isis and Aerogramme rely on simple beauty, instead of bombastic power. “In the Fishtank” is a record series that label Konkurrent has been putting out since 1996. The premise behind it is basically a band, or a group of bands, is given two days of studio time and is in turn suppose to record a record. While, many may not be aware of the project numerous bands have been part of it including, Sonic Youth, Low, and Nomeansno. The latest issue involves post-metal legends Isis and alternative rock nobodies Aereogramme. Where most people are familiar with Isis’s brand of slow paced, crescendo based metal, Aereogramme’s sound is basically a mixing pot of alternative sounds, ranging from intense noise, to soft acoustic ballads. So, when I heard that both bands were going to be writing material for the next “In the Fishtank” I was certainly expecting something great, I wasn’t disappointed.
The album begins with “Low Tide” which mostly resembles an “Oceanic” b-side. The song is plodding and seems like it should be crescendo based, but that epic climax never comes so basically it just sort of drifts along. “Delial” touches on a more aggressive, metal approach and “Stolen” finishes the album off with drifting ambient sounds. Isis and Aereogramme do an excellent job of not just playing each others sound, and instead combine different aspects of their music to create something new. The slow paced nature and atmospheric feel of these tracks certainly isn’t for everyone, but if you are an Isis fan I sincerely recommend this album. In terms of Isis, who I am more familiar with than Aereogramme this album sees them building on a side of their music that hasn’t been seen for many years now. Instead of relying on epic build-ups with this record, Isis and Aereogramme find beauty in subtle repetition.
“In the Fishtank” is a concept that always has a chance to fail. The bands are given a limited amount of time, and are usually paired off with other individuals they aren’t comfortable with. Isis and Aereogramme’s collaboration could have been a sloppy crescendo based mess, but instead it is an album that reflects on the ambient nature of both bands. While it certainly isn’t something incredible, it is a diverse and interesting take on both bands’ sounds and a great distraction from both of the bands’ discographies. With “The Absence of Truth” Isis showed us they could rely on a bombastic post-rock sound, but with “In the Fishtank” they show us they still are able to be just as quiet as always.

Nice and short review for a short release. I think I might check this out, as I'm really getting turned onto Isis lately.

Does anyone know what other bands have participated in this type of thing? It's a very interesting concept and I would love to get my hands on this as well as other records in this series if there are any good bands that did this.

Perfect review for this album, says all that is needed to say.
I thought this one was good, not amazing when compared to Isis' general output. When considering it was a collaboration, though, it's a great showcase of both bands' compatibility.

I love most things isis do, I woudl never put them with aerogramme who i reagrd as hopelessly mediocre, but you seem to be an issi fan liek myself so i might check this out if its as good as you say it is
