Review Summary: No second of sound is to be wasted.
This album is 5 minutes long. You could probably guess just from that that King's Girls play pretty fast, and you would be right. But not only do they play fast, they are spastic, finding themselves constantly starting and stopping without warning. They are chaotic, and they are urgent. All of these attributes are purposefully focused towards a singular thing, a release. Numbers is a release. The seconds of silence in between the tracks are the only breathing space needed. Every second of playing, howling, and banging, is a concentrated release.
While nothing about Numbers beats around the bush, it's not to say that it's a completely approachable album. In fact, it's quite easy to hate. At a quick glance the songs can seem to quickly pass by with shrill eruptions without enough time to form anything cohesive. The true beauty of Numbers, though, is how much of a punch they are able to pack in such a short time. What makes it such an exceptional release is that every short section that passes by is memorable and unique, without compromising their own consistent style. The abrasion all comes together to create a beautiful, however brief, liberation. You just have to listen closely.
