It seems like 'Po Lightnin' gets overlooked sometimes when blues comes up in the musical conversation. It's a shame, because the man has some very worthwhile records to his name. Lightnin' Hopkins, his first self-titled record of a couple, isn't his greatest work, but it should easily tantalize and satisfy anyone who enjoys old-timey Texas acoustic blues. Things are pretty bare here; it's just Lightnin' and his guitar, but that's all you need. He plays some traditional blues numbers and some he himself wrote, but in the end the differences are few and far between. It's quite homogenous in structure, but Hopkins turns in a great performance across all fronts here, helped by that classic and gritty production job. He'd go on to do bigger and better things, surely, but one need not forget his roots.
