Overshadowed by its predecessors, with "Ashes" the band bypassed the chaotic, but quite enjoyable punk- and goth-inspired rants of their debut, and the rather linear post-punk of (the otherwise excellent) "Catastrophe Ballet". The songs here are more complex, the style more varied, and Gitane Demone's vocals make the production more organic and full of texture. The album contains mellow post-punk (The Luxury of Tears"), a classic Christian Death banger ("Face) and, hmmmm, cabaret music ("Lament"). Altogether, it is an awesome release, the last to feature the fantastic Rozz Williams, a vocalist, whose mannerism can only be compared to that of Peter Murphy or Morrissey. And that's a good thing.
